I just dropped the foot on my 1995 Suzuki Dt 65 to inspect the water pump. In the process, I let the shift rod become disengaged from the shift fork. What is the procedure for re-engagement?

Hi,
I'm not sure if You mean the upper connection, or the connection in the lower unit, that is disengaged. In first case the picture below should be all You need to mount it correctly back. In second case I believe a rebuild of the lower unit is the only cure. I had a Suzuki DT65 (1991) before. I hade the lower unit off for changing impeller. If You have disconnected in upper part as in picture below it is easy to mount it back later.
Good luck.
Picture:
http://www.algonet.se/~boem/files/suzuki.jpg

Re: Dt 65 Suzuki shift rod problem

Thanks for the info and diagram. The rod has disegaged from the bottom. There is an intermediate plate on top of the foot that allows some access to the lower unit, but I can't seem to get it off. It will move up about 1/2 " and the stop. There seems to be something holding it where the mainshaft goes thru it. Any ideas?

Hi,
If it has disengaged at the "Pin" (in picture of lower unit I gave a link to) or if it has come loose so the Ball and Spring (see picture of lower unit) has gone out of it's place You need almost for sure to let a marine shop have a look at it. I'm almost sure they have to take the lower unit apart and rebuild it so the shift rod will be in proper place. I do not think that it will be that costly, some hours of work for a trained person I guess. You only need to bring the lower unit to the marine shop then, so it is easy to transport to the shop since You do not need to bring the whole outboard.

Thanks. I kind of figured that. One would think that Suzuki would engineer the foot so that would not occur.

RJZ
