Looking for advice, this engine has been out of the water for 3 years, I have run it periodically with earmuffs, the tell tale is firing strong, I guess the question is, what symptoms should I look out for/tests could I do to diagnose whether there may be issues with the water pump impeller or water/oil seals. I am only going to be using the craft on enclosed waters, so it's not so much a reliability issue more one of avoiding damage and of course the expense assosiated with it. I would appreciate any advice offered... feel free to be technical as I was a motor vehicle mechanic for 16 yrs, just go easy on the marine terminology!!
Thanks.

Re: DT-65

To be on the safe side, I would probably go ahead and change the impeller. SInce it has been out of the water for so long you will want to go ahead and change the lube in the lower unit. Since it has been run periodically, you should be okay on the carbs, but don't be surprised if it hesitates and you have to bring it back and do a full carb cleaning (rebuild). Other than that, you should be good to go. Oh yea, you may want to put a new set of plugs in as well, just for good measure.

Did I miss anything guys? I have not had my morning coffee yet.

Knightgang

Re: DT-65

Hi Anyname,

Buy a new impeller kit with gaskets etc and replace the impeller. Not that difficult to do, but You really need a manual, like Seloc or Clymer (or orginal Suzuki DT55/65 shop manual). It is easy to mess up with the gear rod and mechanism if you do not know how to disconnect/reconnect things.

I had a Suzuki DT65 (1991) before and it had electrical Trim&Tilt, and oil injection. IC ignition also so no need to tune the ignition system, on Suzuki outboards equiped with this system. By the way, I ran my outboard on biodegradable oil and leadfree 95 octane gas (most common in my country) - worked fine.

I would personally make sure the propeller is balanced and in good shape, take it off the shaft and grease the shaft to prevent rust etc.

Change to new gearcase oil is a thing I would do also and new gasket for lower oilplug.

Grease all the grease-points on the outboard with water resistant grease.
Grease all linkage.

New spark plugs with correct gap will be fine also.

Check the zinc-anodes (trim tab, and on lower unit side) so they are OK, and lead wires also.

Good luck!

/Bo
