Hi Thanks all for making a great site!!

We have a Suzuki DT85 (8501 131270) Outboard and the motor will not crank and the trim will not operate.

Changed Battery... and i think someone could have hooked up a charger improperly but i dont know for sure... I can jump the solenoid and turn over the motor with plenty of power to starter. I cant find any fuses or links that could be blown.. i dont think there are any on the boat for any engines functions. Im used to cars.. but i guess thats normal?? The terminals arent exposed for the low voltage switchin on the solenoid so im not sure how to start troubleshooting why the engines electrical system isnt working. Does the little ignition "computer" control the trim functions at all (CDI???) I dont think it could be main power ground or positive as i can jump the solenoid and instant starter engagement.

Thank you so much for your replys to such a boating repair noob!!

Re: Dt85 Electrical Issues

8501 131270 is not the correct Model id it has to be something like DF115TXK1 for example. If it is K1 for the last letter it is 2001, Give me the last digits and i might be able to find you the year . Since there is no power check your battery again make sure it is a marine battery and fully charged, if someone messed up pluging in the battery positive to negative he might have fried your CDI.Make sure the NSS is plugged in ... Follow your wires and do a voltage test. Check your battery wire voltages even if they look good. Check your connections. The trim and tilt wires on Suzukis are pink and blue. Good luck.

Re: Dt85 Electrical Issues

Hey thanks for the reply!

That is the model number i found on the base mounting plate for the engine. i didnt see any other numbers yet. Im new to boat engines so forgive me for my ignorance.. What is an NSS? Also... Does the CDI control the trim functions? I think the CDI is in the ignition compartment on the side of the engine (with the three voltage regulators? or coils?). A little computer box with a mess of wires coming out of it.

What is strange to me is that i get enough power to turn over the motor fine into the starter if i jump the starter solonoid. I see two more solenoids(look like solonoids to me at least) above the one for the starter. I am guessing but i imagine at least one of them is for the hydrolics.. maybe the other as well.... dont know for sure though... Any help is so greatly appreciated

This is an old engine.. at least 90 or older... not sure. Hope that helps.

Re: Dt85 Electrical Issues

Installed new battery already. Voltage at the battery was 12.8v. The starter turned over when jumping the solonoid.. so i cant imagine its a power drop from the battery to the solonoid or starter. Turned over powerfully.

Re: Dt85 Electrical Issues

Anyone know why the hydrolics and the motor wont turn over at the same time? Does the module in the ignition comparment on the engine control both? Anyone know troubleshooting tips to figure what it is? Maybe any insight onto wiring diagram or first place to look. I do have good power on the starter solonoid so im stumped.

Thanks so much for your help!!!
