Got the boat July 17th , I replaced the sparkplugs ith ygk b8hs-10.. I dont kno the proper gap sizing.

First trial trip If i gave it full throttle or even 1/2 it ould bog then die. didnt seem to want to run over1500rpm

Found out carb as plugged, pulled carbs off soaked them overnight and all parts in fuel and carb cleaner and gas, in the morning I took aersol type carb cleaner and blew thru all that i could,, used a toothbrush and got the rest, then used air compressor to finish the clean. ( i didnt remove the bars and such all three carbs ere left together.

Took the boat out on the next trial run ran GREAT for about 15-20 minutes or there about. Then when i gave it full throttle again it wouldnt die but i gained no speed and the engine sounded and smelled like it was flooding out. If i let off the throttle back to where it was it would run fine again at that speed. or in idle but not at greater throttle than that.

Seems to be excessive gas/oil on the plugs.

I am no mechanic by any means so any help would be great.

the model number for this outboard is 8501 002055 if anyone knows the year of this model please let me know as well..

thx

Re: Dt85 Full throttle bogs down

You need to gap the plugs correctly. Did you do a complete breakdown of the carbs? You also need to be careful not to spray the cleaner on the gaskets. It will deform them and screw them up. Your low settings on the carbs should be around 11/4 +- 1/4 after turning clockwise until lightly seated then back out. That is also something to look at. After you gap your plugs run the engine again and pull the plugs and see what they look like. Also do a compression check on all the cylinders. Good luck. Also while wot when you have this problem squeeze the primer bulb and see if it changes anything. If it does then it maybe a fuel pump issue.

Re: Dt85 Full throttle bogs down

When i cleaned the carbs i left all three of them attached to each other. I did not take out the idle screw or whatever it is. But other than that i did complete breakdown. I am goin to go take off the fuel filter right now and see what it looks like.

Ne clue what the gap is for this engine?

Re: Dt85 Full throttle bogs down

You need to take the low jets out located at the top front of each carb and spray some cleaner in each and maybe blow them out with a small amount of pressurized air. Gunk or dirt can sit in the jets and it takes very little to cause issues. Spray the end of the needles also and make sure they are clean. My top carb had this issue early this year and all I did was pull the jet screw out and clean it and the jet and it ran great. When you go to clean them first turn them in until lightly seated and count the "full" turns and see what they are set at just to see if they are correct. Should be around 11/2 turns +-1/4. If no one replies to the gap setting of the plugs I'll get my manual out tonight and look it up for you. The plugs should be tan and dry but you do want to see a little oil on them to make sure you are not running lean. If any of them are wet and oily you may have a lack of spark issue. Good Luck.

Re: Dt85 Full throttle bogs down

Well even tho i was very hesitant I went ahead and took out them jets and cleaned them.... vroom vroom vroom...... off we go..

Used about 4 gallons of gas testing the boat out at 1000 rpms AND every 500 thereafter never hesitated or bogged down, was out on the water for about an hour, thanks for the advice and the help.

Problem solved........ for now =)

Re: Dt85 Full throttle bogs down

The top carb as only about 1 1/4 turn , the second as 1 1/2 and the bottom was just over 1 1/2. Cant wait to see what it does when i take my family out tubing.

BTW, i dont have an air filter any idea on what to use to make one? I do have the cover and stuff just the guy took out the material.

Also i did notice hen at top speed even smaller wakes would launch the boat , am I doing something wrong? would hate to have one of my kids get launched out of the boat =/

They do not come with air filters for the carbs. I can not answer your last questions because I have not a clue what you are asking. Are you saying that when you hit a wake your boat lurches forward? That one is beyond me but my guess would be something is sticking with your carbs.
