dumb (maybe) question about mercruiser throttle handle repair

So my tilt/trim was not working (turned out it was the sensor on the stern drive) but when i was checking the switch on the throttle handle i didnt mark where the throttle handle was positioned when it was removed. now i have to put it all back together. There is a splined stub shaft in the bulkhead that the handle fits on. My question is can that be offset maybe a spline or two? is there a way to tell where the position of the shifter should be? Boat is 1995 Maxum SCR 2400. Thanks in advance

If the shifter is in neutral then install it straight up vertical

Thanks. I did say it was a dumb question. I just wanted to be sure. Much easier to fix on the trailer than on the launch ramp!
