Dummy, forgot to put in forward

So I was in a hurry last night and forgot to put the shifter in forward before I pulled the drive. Alpha 1, see sig for numbers etc. Noticed it was tough to get off, but didn't have my brain turned on. What do I need to look for, might as well fix anything now and get it over with before next summer. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Good chance you bent the shift shaft on the drive or on the gimbal housing, or both. When in forward gear, are parallel with the drive which allows you to pull straight back without damaging anything. Here's what it looks like (this pic was uploaded by ziggy i believe): View attachment 122106

Thanks Greg, I figured I might have, I'll look when I get home. I knew what to do, just had a brain fart as my kid was with me, I was bsing yada yada. I literally gave myself the big dope-slap on the forehead a bit ago when I realized that I hadn't shifted it in forward. I'm just wondering if anybody that has removed the drive while in neutral has been able to salvage what was left? Does it always bend something, how hard is it to replace the shift shaft? Pissed I forgot this/got in a hurry. Thanks again for any info.

The 1st time I removed my gen II, I put the throttle all the way forward, but had pressed the neutral switch. duh! Came off hard, but nothing was bent.

Put it in gear, and see if the fork is pointed straight back.

I did the same thing as John_S the first time I removed the lower unit.
I bent the intermediate shaft fingers but managed to straighten them.
