Re: Dump and reinstall OS

Did you want to totally erase the computer and reinstall the OS?

What are the specs on your computer ie. age, processor, memory etc.?

You maybe better off installing Win98SE at the very least.

Re: Dump and reinstall OS

if it's XP or 2k OEM install disk:

Just put in the disk, it will boot from cdrom, and during the install process, tell it to format the partition to NTFS

If it's 95/98, you will need to boot from cd, tell it to boot to dos prompt

Then you can Format c:

Then reboot and boot to cd and install.

..If your computer does not boot from cd, go into bios and change the boot sequence. (usually "del" at startup, or F2)

dolluper.... rock on. 95b is solid, stick with it.

go into bios, set boot order to boot from cdrom,

If you can't boot to cdrom, you will need a boot disk with cdrom support. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm to make one...

With boot disk booted to C:\ format c:

Then go to your cd rom drive d:\ and type setup

This should launch win95 install and your good to go from there

If you have stuff on there you don't want to loose, you can copy it to floppys from the dos screen before you format, or install a 2nd hard drive and copy to that drive if larger that 1.44mb floppy. or, 3rd option, is install to a different directory, get your computer working, then backup, then format and do the clean install. It's double work, but another way to save your data.

Re: Dump and reinstall OS

Are you doing this from floppy disks or cdrom?
The other problem you will have will be drivers, if you don't have internet access on another pc, this will be tuff to do, without the driver disks.

80's machine...possibly Phoenix bios or early Award. This a late 386 or 486?

I've still got a 386-16 with WIN 3.11 running...and it too has TurboBoost.

At start up, during memory check hit the DEL key and go into the bios setup. There should be a low level format in the HDD section. Format the drive and then slip WIN95 disk into the floppy. Depending on the bios type, when you exit, it may not continue, so you may have to restart. Windows should load without issue.

If you don't have format in bios...you should be able to use the WIN95 start up disk. Instead of typing setup, type fdisk c: at the a:\ prompt. Fdisk should run and set up the drive. Don't partition it, it's too small. Then when that is done, type setup and let windows complete the install.

Good luck! Zod

You have to partition the drive, fdisk does not format the drive and make it so that windows can be installed.

You should be able to do like noel said! Boot to the cdrom and run setup!
