Duraglass as peanut butter?

My resin just arrived from US Composites today, and I'm hoping on getting my new transom installed by this weekend. Once that's done, I've got to rebuild a box around the motor compartment, 4 bulkheads, and 2 main stringers. Since I'd like to conserve on my resin to laminate the stringers, transom, and floor, I was wondering if I could pick up a gallon of Duraglass from Autozone (fiberglass reinforced resin) to create my fillets around the transom and stringers. Has anyone ever done this? Would it be better just to mix up my own PB?

It probably wouldn't hurt to use it but not sure if you're really saving much in the way of material. If your experience turns out like some of us, you'll have underestimated the amount of supplies you need. It's usually an advantage to stick with one material but it's also nice to experiment and see what else is going to work and is available on a Friday afternoon when you're running low on resin or filler.

I've been using bondo resin/glass mix as a filler. Thought I would only need a half quart at the end but on my third quart now :). Keep finding little things to finish up or improve!

Convenience is key with this restore situation.. You would not believe how hard it is to find ANY of these fiberglass products locally. I've called 6 different places today looking for a fiberglass roller and NO ONE even knows what one is!!!! I plan to bang most of the glassing out this weekend, but I'm not going to be able to if I can't find product!

Wow... Never thought about allthread and washers! That might just save me a ton of time and hassle.. maybe even a few bucks.

Here's some pics attached. The best girlfriend in the world with a grinder in hand, and a "before" pic of the stringers. Believe it or not, the two outside stringers were clean, dry wood. The two center stringers, especially where they connected with the rotted bulkheads, where junk.

There will be few supply houses that know what you're talking about when asking for a bubble buster or fiberglass roller. Ask about a marine fiberglass roller and see if they have an idea of what you're talking about. Keep in mind that the roller will be useless if you allow it to become gummed up.

Try places like Carquest and NAPA for at least a few supplies. Home Depot and Lowes will have disposable plastic containers in various sizes. Harbor Freight has boxes of spreaders and nitrile gloves.

call these guys to see if they'll sell you resin, mat and cloth, or know who will locally: http://www.starboardmarinerepair.com/

Try google to see if any of the automotive paint supply houses have any glass supplies - probably not much but may be a start.

hello rucaradio..

simply put... NO.. use cabosil/resin mix pb ( not too thick to create too much heat ) and lay over it when it gels up.

Basically if you do any fill radi .. do your fill-radi and brush a small batch of resin over it ( removing any hard shapes created by a spreader or such.. ). then when it gells up ( you can even burr off nubs with scrap 40 grit ) layup your layers of glass.. Done..

Lol... I don't know who I should listen to!

It's common sense that since the boat is poly and Duraglas (or reinforced filler) is poly it WILL stick. I know that poly is ordinarily very brittle without fiberglass, but there is a picture of a boat on the can of Bondo Glass.. Odd.

Is it just a matter of preference?
