I have a 2004 Dodge Durango (with a 4-prong flat plug) that I am having problems with the running lights on both my boat trailer as well as my little bumper-pull flatbed. When plugged in to both trailers, the hazards, stop & turn signals work....but NO running lights. Hooked up both trailers to another vehicle to eliminate possible trailer wiring problems & the running light WORKED on them! Checked for a seperate trailer fuse on the Durango & there is nothing that I saw (i also confirmed this with the Dodge dealer). Soooo...this points me to a wire problem on the Durango & I was wondering how I start troubleshooting to find the problem? Thanks for the help!

First ensure that you are getting a connection at your plug on the vehicle, if no connection there, then more than likely the problem is at the junction box where it connects to the vehicle. These junction boxes sometimes get corrosion in them, hope this helps.

Sounds like you have a problem with your truck, best way is to get a Digital Voltmeter and start looking for where the voltage stops, if you have checked your fuses then the next thing to do is check the plug on the truck, then look for where the truck trailer plug pigtail plugs into the vehicle wiring harness, as stated look for corrosion at all places this could be as simple as a corroded pin on the trailer plug to a corroded connector at the pigtail, if you have 12 VDC at the pigtail but none at the connector you will have to take the connector apart and look for a bad/corroded connection there, if you don't have or know how to use a DVM its pretty simple but without it your simply looking to get lucky, in this case you could also use a simple trouble light since your looking for voltage but I prefer a DVM since it also allows you the ability to look for resistance which is handy when looking for bad connections.

Is this a new setup, or a new problem on a vehicle that used to work?

Turn ON your headlights.

Measure from Pin#1, White, (Ground) <to> Pin #2, Brown, (Tail/Marker Lights).

Trace the Brown wire Forward, until you find 12 volts.

The Brown wire will pass through the Standard Converter Box (5 Wires IN, 4 OUT), but only for the sake of neatness.
It only passes through the Converter and does nothing inside.

Exception: You have a Powered Converter. (6 Wires IN , 4 OUT)

Make sure all your pins are seated all the way. I had one that had a loose pin, it would make and lose contact when I hit bumps. I just pushed the pin in till it clicked into place, never had trouble again.
