When your windows xp dvd burner doesn't recognize your media {cd or dvd disc|}
It worked before and doesn't now
Try this fix first
Control panel ddl click
next ddl click on system
click on hardware tab
device manager tab click
Scrool down to IDE ATA TAPI CONTROLLERS
expand the little plus by this to open the controllers

right click on secondary ide channel
scrool down to properties and click
click on ADVANCED settings tab
now if your problem player is D drive look in device location 0 info..
..E drive look in device location 1 info

There is drop box in the Transfer Mode section
click on the problem player one and change it to PIO ONLY click ok
Player should burn and play again if not a registry fix or new player

Forgot to say this after the usual checks cables connected right ,power connected right ,device manager saying device is operateing correctly, registry fix ,admin fix low and high filters check....and low and behold this fixes the problem .....it's the very first on my list now plus the fact it took me longer to write out the destructions than to do the fix...me pleased

Re: DVD burner quits reconizing media Windows XP fix

Hmmmm? I went to look just for fun. I do not have 'secondary IDE controller' listed. I only have 'secondary IDE channel'.

But then may be it is because I only have two CD's, not DVD's?

If I look at properties under 'secondary IDE channel' it shows the two devices and both are declared 'DMA if available' and the 0 unit shows a transfer mode of 'PIO' and the 1 unit shows 'Ultra DMA mode 4'.

But again, I'm not having any problems.
