DVD Player not working

I have a cheaper, no name brand DVD/VHS player. Problem is, as of 2 days ago the DVD player does not play most DVD's. I have cleaned the unit with a disk cleaner, removed the cover and cleaned the lasor, made sure it turns (seems to be turning fast enough), etc. It will play any CD that I put in the unit, but it will not read DVD's. Any thoughts or suggestions before I spend the $ for a new one?

The lazer can give you problems reading DVD as it
is a different format than music CD's. If the
lazer is out of alignment or just plane worn. It
aint worth fixing. Cheaper and less problematic
to replace it. Remember to smash it first.

Re: DVD Player not working

FWIW- I have the "opportunity" to send shipments of damaged goods out of the Best Buy store where I work 2-3 times per weeek. These include items customers bring in to our geek squad, bring in because they have a service plan and the item stopped working, or that arrive to us broken without us knowing until its sold because its a manufactures problem......

I would venture a guess to say that of all the things that need to be fixed, excluding computers 70 to 80% of the stuff is the off brand product (mainly dvd players and small tv's). Now not all the off brand stuff is junk, some of it is okay, and to be honest i buy quite a bit of it epending on what i am buying.......that being said dvd players are the one thing that I would almost always buy name brand. Heck you can get a decent Sony or Toshiba for $50 to $60, when the off brand is only 20 less......JMHO

Xcusme, this subject came up before and you posted this link. As a result, I always turn the master power switch off for my $26.00 DVD player. So far, it always works when called upon.

Yup, same here...I've used my original Apex player for years. Always works without a hitch. Just don't leave them in 'standby'mode.... ;)

Re: DVD Player not working

Hmmm, just able to get back - anyway, the turning off makes sense. My wife has a habit of leaving it on constantly! Not really sure why, other than the daughter finishes her video while mom is doing something else and the DVD player ends up staying on for a couple of days till I come around and turn it off.

When I get a chance, in a few days, I will look into your repairs, Xcusme. Thanks for the link! If they don't work, I may ship it up to Bob to use his high explosive magic on it, then off to another system.

Re: DVD Player not working

We have two dvd players that will have problems with how should I say it. Home burned DVDs. The ones we get at the video store or buy always work. A couple of guys at work will occasionally burn one that will only work in one of our machines at home. Funny thing is that machine is the cheapest one we have in the house
