Anybody use a digital video recorder, with over-the-air digital TV?

We only have local digital channels, but DW wants to record proprams to watch later. Some shows conflict what she is currently watching, Others from off hours, or when she is gone.

Since "Tivo" etc are tied with pay TV, they are out.

Some models say they can record one program, while you are watching another, which is deirable.

I don't have cable and use my dvr with antenna feeds. Are you looking to build your own?? I use mythtv/mythbuntu as a set top box with remote. I don't have them, but for tuners I would recommend hdhomerun tuners. They are network based and have dual tuners,

why is tivo out? you can buy a tivo unit and pay the $12.95/month just to have it active. you dont have to get the local cable service as well.

I'm on a really old cable system where they put filters inline to take out what you dont pay for. they recently updated it to use newer modems for cable internet but for some reason didnt upgrade the rest of the system.

anyway, the new modems dont work with the filters so they removed those and now I just have a raw feed coming into the house. got curious and unhooked from my modem and hooked up a spare tv, what do you know, I get basic service. decided to unhook my tivo from my satellite dish and hook it to the feed. sure enough, once I input the local cable co info, it downloaded the guide and off I went.

with an actual tivo unit, all you're doing is paying to the have the unit itself active through tivo and able to download guides to it. its the cable company specific units you have to pay for tivo and for service for.

but yeah, a regular tivo (mine is a tivo series2 80gb unit) will work with whatever you receive through your cable line as-is.

Paying $150 per year, to watch TV, is $150 too much. ;)

Are you looking at applications or premade devices? No matter what you do there will be a subscription for listings. As I said , I use the Mythtv DVR app on Ubuntu Linux and pay $20/year for the listings using their preferred Schedules Direct listing service.

If you are more comfortable with Windows, BeyondTv is a nice appliction and would be my choice if I were to build a Windows based DVR.

as roger stated, about the only other thing I can think of would be to turn a spare desktop into a media center. get a tv card for it and hook it to the internet for listings downloads and record that way.

all standalones require a subscription fee of some sort.
