E-8 Carb Issues

Can't find the old thread as to make an update so, this is more or less what was posted. I'n not a big fan of constant carb cleans as boat all year round and run my bowl dry after each outing. My boating life was problem free untill E-8 was added to our nice 90/95/97/98 octane unleaded gasolines.

Some time ago experimented power loss at wot, dismantled my 18 horse carb and to my astonishment & surprise found this horrible and strange clog, looks like sugar crane round particles (pic-1) cleaned complete gas system from tank to carb and the engine went back to it's normal boating life.

A new 18 horse has arrived and my beloved 2007 companion will stop operation this week end, wanting the new owner to have 0 carb problems, dismantled again the carb to have a look, after 15 worked hours since last full carb service, this E8 stuff has appeared in small quantities (pic-2) with constant use definitely will clog carb as previous time. Luckily the "crap" is just accumulating on gas passage alone and not entering bowl area.

Just as a experimentation as don't want to strip my carb that often, have replaced the factory filter which has a nice thin mesh for a car filter which has a paper element. Hope this should take care of the E waste properly.

Have any oy you guys that are non fuel stabilizers users experiment this king of residual E crap between gas pump and carb fuel entrance specially on engines that has pumps attached to carb bodies ?

Re: E-8 Carb Issues

Luis,

There's a possibility that the recent introduction of E gas in Peru is still cleaning out your country's fuel distribution system. If so, you may be seeing the result of dissolved water in the e gas. Not free water, that separates easily in a baja funnel, but actual dissolved water. A water-separating filter may help some. Time on the calendar will also help, as once the crap is cleaned out of the tank trucks, service stations, etc., the fuel should be a little higher purity.

Be careful with paper filters. You don't want anything finer than about 10 microns. A 2 micron filter may cause fuel starvation at high speeds, which could burn a piston.

Re: E-8 Carb Issues

Thanks Paul,

Always nice to have a precise tech answer from you, will second the issue of still cleaning the country's fuel distribution system. Can't determine the issue about microns, Toyota filter is doing it's job, only time will tell if paper filters minimizes/solves E-8 problems compared to mesh filters untill all stations gets rid of most crap inside their tanks. Will be aware of fuel starvation issues at high speeds if filter is not compatible with engine.
