E-Tec is totally ran off of the computer program if I?m not mistaken similar to that on a Cummins or Detroit diesel in a semi truck you can hook it up to your lap top and everything you want to know about that motor just spits right out like a tattle tale. Where can the common laymen buy the E-Tec program? I want to be able to hook it to my lap top and prove (example)that there is 66 hours on the motor and that the max RPM was 4200 for a period of 3 minutes
I?m really impressed by this motor and if a guy is going to buy or sell a used motor it sure could be a deal breaker or deal maker. So if anyone has any knowledge on where to purchase one with the appropriate cable I sure would appreciate it

Re: E-TEC Computer program INFO needed

You need a laptop with a serial port (or a USB to serial converter), a special cable and the software. You can order the cable and software from any BRP Evinrude dealer, but it's expensive (the cable is ~ $92 and the sw is over $300). The cable can be made up for under $25 if you're handy.

If you're looking for cheap. this is hard to beat (10' serial cable for $1.99):

Cut off one end, and attach a Deutsch connector DT04-3P available for under $12
available here:
http://www.deutschconnector.com/products/deutsch_dt_3-way_connectors.html

Just connect as shown below:

DT04-3P DB9F

C <-------red--------------------< 2 RD --> input

A <-------black------------------< 3 TX <-- output

B <-------shield------------------< 5 GND

|--< 1 DCD --> input
|
|--< 4 DTR <-- output

DEUTSCH DB9F RS-232 SIGNALS (wire colors may differ)
DT04-3P

The DB9 pinout is readily available by Googling "db9F serial pinout).

You need to be aware that the sw can change things, like injector duration, oiling, etc. ... caveat emptor.

$300 isn't cheap but when your talking 4 to 5 K for a used motor 300 is very cheap. Example I look at a motor and take it to the shop for them to hook up there lap top and they charge me a $100 bench fee do it 3 times its paid for but I also have a valuble tool when I called a dealer to see about buying program I was told it was available to dealers only so if someone knows a dealer please feel free to pass on info thanks

I have the sw for a few years ... the dealer was reluctant, but it was coupled to a motor purchase, so they caved. I would try this dealer:
barnaclebillsmarinesupply.com

BTW, they support a great E-Tec only web site:

I can't believe they'd charge that kind of money for a computer printout !...when we do an ETEC report we rarely charge if they're a regular customer...if not - 40 bucks max :cool:
