Specifics:

1) 83 Wellcraft CC (20" inch transom)
2) 78 Evinrude 175 (25" shaft)
3) Jack Plate (7 in set back, motor mounted in bottom hole).

I have bought the items seperately and began some initial testing before going all out. This motor sat for 6 months and has an unknown service history, but looks cared for. Before it was mounted to the boat it ran on muffs (1 hour) and all was OK. Mounted the motor and ran at the ramp in gear (varied throttle) and was OK. Put the boat in the water 2 times and have an issue with bogging down at speed or moving from low speed.

Symptoms:

Boggs down at high speed or moving to high speed after motor warms up. It behaves like it is going to plane out then just stays in the bow up position and the motor just chugs and bogs but stays running (no tach at this time). I can put the motor in nuetral and it runs and rev's great and does NOT die. Put it back in gear and it bogs down when giving it throttle. I tried to choke it while it is bogging and the condition gets worse. The bulb is hard all the time. I'm not sure if it is a warming issue either or just that it is running for 5 - 10 minutes. The last time it was out I was running around 30mph for the first 3 mile run, I circled around at speed and the bogging started again. Kinda like something moved (crud maybe) and began blocking fuel. I Let the motor idle for 10 minutes or so while checking on a few things and then took off fine for a mile or so then began bogging again. During this last run I went thru 3 gallons of gas in the first 3 mile run at 30mph, which seems excessive. I would say it drank quite a bit of fuel in the driveway and at the ramp also. Just didn't keep track (darn)!

Items to Consider:

1) Fresh Gas in temp test tank (50:1 Synthetic)
2) Fuel Pump Filters cleaned
3) Bulb is hard at all times (new 6' long 3/8's id)
4) New Plugs J4C's at .030
5) Carbs NOT rebuilt (next step)
6) Motor telltale fine, water pressure at 10-15 psi, can hold my hand on the heads for a long time.
7) Old in line fileter (will be replaced)
8) New port side power pack.

The issue seems to be fuel related but wanted thoughts on timing or anything else. From the timing perspective I wonder if the throttle return spring could be weak. Anyone dealt with the spring before? Could it be a temperature issue? Maybe the deflector tubes need replacing. Also, I have not checked thermostats yet either. Seems odd that I can hold my hand on the heads almost indefinetly (warm but not realy hot).

Plans include rebuild carbs, new mainfold gasket, inspect reeds, replace fuel pump vacum hoses (the others are all new) and a new inline clear filter. I'm also rechecking all electrical connections and grounds.

I don't want to just jump in start replacing alot of items with out knowing the cause. Your help and suggestions are most welcome and appreciated.

In my opinion, I would say that it is carb related.....I have gone through a similar situation with my 1969 55hp Johnson...(which I have a listing here today for carb setting). I have almost completely rebuilt my motor including the wiring harness...and it ran well on land... but boged and ate fuel in the water.. so if the needles in the carb are good and sharp, I would say that a good cleaning, and proper jet settings, will propbably solve your situation.. Best Regards, Ross in Bancroft Onatrio

When the engine "bogs" it is not getting full power out of one or more cylinders.

That could be electrical or fuel.

One way to tell if it's electrical is with an inductive timing light. Put the inductive pickup on each plug wire, while it's acting up. If the light doesn't flash, that cylinder is not firing.

Progress Update

Off came the carbs, intake, and flywheel last night.

1) Pickup sensor has a nicked wire and is very sticky from old dirty grease. OE manual says to use OMC Moly Lube on it. Any alternatives like White lithium or Triple Guard. Cant find the Moly Lube. I can cut and splice the nicked wire. However will this cause problems with resitance if the wire is slighlty shorter? Currently shows 18.5 ohms with the nick in it. Will check for grounding problems with the wire later today

2) A few of the reeds are not fully closed. Any suggestions on new versus used?

3) Carbs are dirty (fine grit) inside and soaking in chem dip over night. Yes high and low speed jets are out as well as the core plugs. Have new BRP kits with floats to go into them after cleaning.

Any suggestions on items 1 an 2 above.

DJ: I agree on eliminate the electrical side but was by myself and couldn't handle the light and driving. Will do on my next water visit.

Bogging problem is solved but not sure which of the items fixed it.

A second opinion on the reeds led me to not replace them. Maybe a winter project with Boyesens.

Carbs completely overhauled and cleaned. 2 high speed jets were blocked. Not anymore!

Pickup coil was cleaned and relubed. The nicked wire was fixed. No advance problems noted.

With the carbs redone it sure is different to start. Takes longer to get it running and was way harder to start with back pressure. Will have to work on the routine.

Thanks for the help

Great news. Do a search for starting procedures. May save you some time.
