E225STLEDE

Since owning this motor I have always had this little issue that just bugs me.

Slow speed stalls. Whether it is loading up on the trailer or just moving to a new spot to to fish. Hole shots are problematic until I get a little momentum up.

The motor runs great except for this issue. Recently I tore the motor down and rebuilt #3. It lost a ring pin and damaged the sleeve. I was hoping that the fresh compression in the 6th cylinder would help.

Honestly it doesn’t seem like adjustments to the idle timing has much effect.

Is it possible that my oiler is over oiling and this is making combustion a little weak? I know it’s over oiling just based on the smoke and the way my warm up tub looks after a good run.

i have new thermostats in the motor. However, it’s only getting up to about 120°. I know it should be around 145°. Is it possible that the “over oiling” is causing the temp problem also?

Could it be something that simple?

What are some other ideas?

I do not think " over oiling " is the issue.----A test bucket will show sludge on the top in no time.-----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more on all 6 leads , yes or no ?-----Could be running on 5 of 6 cylinders.----What did the crankshaft sealing rings look like when you had them off the shaft ?---Any wear on them ?

Sealing rings looked good.

But along those lines im certain that I have an air leak between the two halves.

i went back and confirmed torque. One of my main bearing bolts because one of them was shiny clearly had a leak. The bolt would not hold torque. I can’t imagine that I skipped this bolt when I applied final torque. I pulled the bolt out and the threads looked fine. Re-installed the bolt and couldn’t get any final torque again. From about 1/8” from the bottom I pushed the head of the bolt really hard and was able to make the bolt jump a thread.

i have no idea what may have happened. Maybe my torque wrench needs calibrated? Maybe I used the wrong torque. (I sure hope this isn’t it) But none the less, my block has at least one bad thread. I’m tearing it back down today.

I’d have to go back and look. But, it seems like 35 ft/lbs

If the torque wrench is turning but torque is not going up you are pulling the aluminum threads out.

:-(...that makes me sad.....

what would be the fix? Helicoil? would that be strong enough?

Take the block to a welder to fill the hole and have machine shop re-thread the hole?

Can you even do that with cast aluminum?

Sure you can weld cast aluminum.----They weld gearcase skegs all the time , yes ?-----The issue here is welding may distort the block and cause alignment / bearing problems !!!-----This is precision stuff here.

re: Skegs oh yeah right

ugh...I've played with a product called cool ice that is a heat fence putty...would that work from warping the case?

So it turned out that I had an air leak. I pulled the motor and took it apart. I got it sealed up really nice. The issue seems to be fixed. However, I think I may have a weak spark also. I'm looking into that now as well.
