Looking for suggestions, part numbers, and whatever ya got to offer. The evinrude tilt motor works when it wants to. At first it didn't work at all until I removed the motor and cleaned the armature. Then, I had to bleed the system to get the cylinders/pistons in position to mount the tilt unit. The Johnson is a little different. I just bought this boat which has been sitting out in the weeds for a few years. Trim works but bleeds down sitting still. Hoping to get around to checking/fixing both of them this weekend. I'm thinking I need seals and check valve for the Johnson. Not sure what the deal is with the Evinrude... it worked fine out of water but when I put it in the water it doesn't work at all.

intermittent motor failure on the 3w prestolite with 1970's style wiring is almost always a bad motor, a bad switch feed, or a corroded connection. It can also be a bad switch or solenoid but that tends to be a failure in one direction. So your EV probably just has a bad motor. You can buy adequate quality chinese versions on ebay for under $150. If Crane Hill is anywhere near salt water then you'll want to spray it down with plasti-coat or flex-seal. The chinese motors don't have the same quality of metals or finishes as original and can corrode quickly.

Your johnny does not fit any profile. failure to lift with a working motor is usually associated with failure to hold. You should double check fluid level. If fluid is full, then open MRV and see if system moves by hand. If the reservoir is full and the system is not mechanically seizing then I would guess somebody tried to take the valve body apart and left something out when they put it back together.

nope.. no saltwater around here. I bought the pontoon from a guy who has had it on the Tennessee river near Huntsville. The lake I'm on is the 3rd cleanest lake in the United States.. .awesome deep clear water here... and very good BIG hybrid stripe fishing... I'm kinda betting that the boat just sitting up for too long is the biggest problem... definitely need to seal the motor really good after giving the armature and brushes a good cleaning. If that doesn't work I'll be getting another trim motor. Thanks for the reply! Both motors move easily by hand when the valve is opened.
