I am in the market for a Fish finder / GPS unit for my 20 foot pontoon boat. I will be using it in the rivers & tidal basin of South East Georgia around the Savannah area. So will be in brackish & salt water.

I like the specs on the Eagle FishElite 642c iGps. They offer a lot for the money which makes me skeptical. Does anyone have any experience with this product? Anyone have any other recommendations? Keep them under $550.00 please.

Re: Eagle FishElite 642c iGps Combo

In the absense of other input, I will offer a couple of items to review based on my experience with the Eagle 502ci Intellimap. It had a nice readable screen and the 642 has a higher resolution, so should provide even more detail. I used Lowrance MapCreate 6.3 maps, and they displayed well. Even used it for a car "map assist" gps for awhile.

I did have some issues with the internal gps loosing lock while leaning over the boat dash, and even sometime on my suv dash. It would then take awhile to re-aquire the birds. The 502 did not have a connector to add an external gps receiver. If the 642 has an external connector you could probably fix it if it became an issue.

The other issue, which might have been just a unit defect, was that it was very sensitive to slight power drops. This was not related to weak batteries, or wiring, and did it in both boat and vehicle. It would happen on most engine starts. It became annoying to wait for the sat re-aquirement. I was going to make a cap/diode device that might help with this, but ended up selling to get a new HB SI combo.
