do they make earmuffs that will fit my 2001 short shaft 8hp Johnson. or do i have to run it in the barrel? I go in the river where the water is salty so i flush it when i come back. I just don't like having to drag a barrel out and fill it up everything i need to flush it.

cabelas has one for a small outboard that has water intake under cavitation plate.

For what it's worth - I've used a garbage can many times, but now use a smaller storage tub type thing, and leave it dedicated for this use so I don't have to deal with an oily garbage can. It only cost about $10-15. I don't know how big it is, but it's deep, wide and long enough to run the kicker in gear with the prop spinning at high idle. I run the hose to replace splash, but I've found that if I run it in reverse, it seems to drive far less water out of the tub, but still put the engine under load for adjusting carb, etc. It is smaller, quicker to fill, and easier to empty. My next step will be to put some sort of removable plug in the bottom to make it even easier to use.
