Ear Muffs / Dog ear problems?

I have a 1985 Mercruiser 140MR. I just replaced the impeller and still can't get water from the stern drive with dog ears and a garden hose hooked up. There is no blockage, but a guy told me he had similar problems with the dog ears that only forced water in from one side and just had the suction cup on the other side. Has anyone had this problem before? Should I just take it to the lake and drop it in and see if it works there?

or fill a garbage pail with water...

I seem to remember the same problem once.. it was something silly, like I was afraid to crank the faucet all the way open.. and once I did it was fine.

I had a similar problem and found that my coupler had been spun out from improper alignment. The engine ran fine but the driveshaft wasn't spinning, therefore no water circulation!

As Hystat states a garbage pail will work great. The muffs dont always work but you can duct tape them on before turning on the water.Single inlet muffs should not make a difference but they do make a dual type you can try.Charlie

did you remember to replace the impeller keyway, was the rubber seal in the upper waterpump cover, did the copper water tube actually go into the guide tube, does the water tube have a corroded hole thru it, did the waterpocket cover melt away,is the tube too short to reach the seal.is the hose between the drive and transom in place and not kinked
