Hello, I have a 14ft Mirror craft aluminum V hull open style boat with a 25 Johnson currently on it but the LU is trash, and my buddy offered to sell me his 9.8 merc at a good price as a replacement of the 25 and I know its a solid motor. So the question I have is will this 9.8 merc plane my boat out? What are some of y'all s opinions or experiences that you have had with these small 9.8s on 14ft aluminum boats? Thanks in advance.

Hi I have a similar boat 225 lbs + gear have a 15hp on it goes up no problem. 9.8 hp I would try it first he is a friend he will understand try it before you buy it. Good luck.

Hello:

I hate to bring this up, but if it says 110, then it's a pre 1979

Thank you for your responses. I am not sure of the exact year I just assumed it was early 80's it does not have a title. I could get the model number but it would be a few days me and the friend do not live that close to each other. But they deffinatly say 110 on the cowl. Even if they are pre 1980 does this mean anything bad like parts etc...it does have a 2 blade prop on it and I would assume I would have to get a 3 blade for it but I could be wrong. Still my question stands will these old 9.8/10hp mercs plan a 14ft boat and carry it a decent pace?? Heres a pic of the motor one is a parts motor that it will come with. (both do have the LU removed in this pic)

Those are between a 1972 and 1975 in year. As for planing a 14 foot boat, depends on the boat and load. If it's a lightweight tinny, then most likely. A 14 foot fiberglass like pictured, not a chance.

Its a small open utility style aluminum V hull Jon. So its very light and I only usually have myself and a cooler/rods etc, I just use it for solo trips I have other boats to use when I have company. Guess I will just have to go give it a try myself and see how it handles.
