early 80's Merc 115 water pump question

I have an early 80's model Mercury 115 with a bad water pump - impeller was being ate up inside by keyway. I just bought a new water pum kit, but the top housing doesn't have a seal where the drive shaft goes through. The bottom housing does have a seal. Is the top half of the pump housing supposed to have a seal?? Thanks!

Try looking at an exploded view in your manuel, instructions (if they came with the kit), or have your local dealer pull it up on they're computer or micro-fisch. If you don't have a local dealer, you can find one and call them. How did it look when you took it apart???<br /><br />Good luck
