Early Model Evinrude Idle-ing High and Stalls when past 1/2 Throttle?

I have a older model boat and 135hp evinrude. It's been sitting up for at least 5 years. It took awhile to start up, however the motor idles really high. When in the water, it still idles high. When put into gear, it jerks into forward and into reverse also. Runs ok, but when throttle up to 1/2-3/4 doesn't go any faster. After about thirty minutes, when throttle up past 1/4-1/2 it stalls. ANY Ideas of what to do?<br />Thanks

willisballs,<br /><br />Before I did anything I would sart looking at the control cables and the linkages under the hood.<br /><br />The engine may need a synch and link performed. you will need a manual to do it.<br /><br />You may find one at the local library, or they are available on this page-lower left co.orner.

Probably would be a good idea to rebuild the carbs too.

It would be a REAL good idea to rebuild the carbs, after it sat for 5 years, per Dave's advice...
