I just bought a 1998 60hp Yamaha that was used in salt water only. The motor looked great, very clean. The guy I bought it from said he flushed the motor every time it was pulled out of the water. I believe he did take care of it because of how clean the motor was. When I pulled off the lower unit drain screw it was evident it had been leaking due to the milky lower unit oil that drained out. The magnet screw had normal metal particles attached to it. I did test the motor out before purchasing it and it ran like a top and shifted fine. Do I need to worry about this since it was used in salt water. He said he changed it in January and it was fine. I plan on getting the lower unit seals changed out before using it. I'm not very familar with saltwater mantaince so is there anything else I need to check on.

I also need a 703 remote and cables that will work with this motor. Thanks, Jeff

Don't have alot of saltwater experience but I would think saltwater in oil wouldn't do too much so as long as you reseal it I wouldn't worry too much.

Yamaha stuff is outragously expensive, check on Ebay for the control, you can find a deal on there now and then.

I will look, I may have a control box in the garage, may even have a key switch but no cables.

That is nothing to worry about. Salt water is not going to eat the insides since its full of oil.
I ran a 25 hp Johnson for years with a leaky LU. I just changed the oil a few times a year.

Crazy thing is I had a pressure test and vaccume test done on the lower unit and it tested fine!! No leak... I had the prop balance tested and it was fine. Maybe the water came from around the oil fill screws. I will have to keep a eye on it and see.

I did fine some ( 703) controls brand new in the box for $180. yippeee.. Thanks for the replies....JN

I am thinking just the opposite.....the oil and water seperate or at least over time would and you would have salt water sitting next to the aluminum...

I took apart a motor used for a long time in salt water and a lot of the inside was pitted away...

the bearings pitted as did the thrust washers....most places in the system can be washed and flushed....but not where water wasnt supposed to be!!!

but i wouldnt worry too much if the motor was well taken care of as you allude to, then the water hasnt been in the lower unit long..probably since the last oil change.......

if he took care of it, then he might have changed the lube regularly..

good luck
