Easy way to find info on your OMC outboard!

I am surprised no one has posted this is the frequently asked question forum!<br /><br />All OMC outboards made between 1980 and 1998 contain a Model number like:<br />HE10SELCCD Often spaced out like HE 10 SE L CC D <br />If You have an outboard Made after 1998 or a model number that looks nothing like the one above please scroll down past the dotted line. <br /><br />Here is a quick way to decode this!<br /><br />The first Character is the model type, which is as follows:<br />A Australia<br />B Belgium<br />C Canada<br />H Hong Kong<br />S South America<br />T Tracker (Tracker cowl but OMC engine)<br />V Boat Manufacture<br /> So for the example model number, It would be a Hong Kong Model.<br /><br />The next character is the engine type:<br />E Evinrude<br />J Johnson <br /> So the example Serial is an Evinrude engine. E for Evinrude :) <br /><br />The next two or three numbers are your engines horse power, It really can not be any simpler then that! 3 is three horsepower, 10 is 10 horsepower, 300 is 300 horsepower.<br /> We have the number 10 in the serial number so we have a 10 horsepower engine!<br /><br />The next digit or set of digits (usually two but sometimes one) tells you what type of outboard you have. Here is how to tell, please note that some features can have different characters:<br />C Counter rotation (if you had twins)<br />D Remote Electric start<br />DE De-rated Electric start<br />DR De-rated Rope start<br />DT De-rated electric start, but with Trim or tilr<br />E plain old Electric Start<br />ER Electric start but with a sporty look<br />ES Special Electric start<br />F rope start<br />G special styling<br />H Hydraulic Steering<br />J Jet drive<br />K tiller controlled but electric start<br />M Manuel tilt<br />N another character for counter rotation<br />P Power steering<br />R Rope start<br />RC Commercial, No electric start but with CDI<br />RD Rope Start De-Rated<br />RP commercial with Programed tilt<br />RS commercial with tope start<br />RW commercial with interlock trim<br />S Sail type engine (for sailboats) but special styling<br />SC Special styling, Counter rotation<br />SE Sail (Yachtman or something) with Electric start<br />SP Special styling<br />SR Sail (high thrust) with Rope start<br />ST Trim and tilt, with special Styling<br />T electric Start with trim and tilt<br />TE Tiller controlled with Electric start<br />TR Trim and Tilt, special styling<br />TT Trim and Tilt but Tiller controlled<br />U manUel tilt<br />V special gearcase<br />W Rope Start with an offset drive<br />WM commercial electric start manuel tilt<br />WT commercial electric start TRIM and tilt<br /> So our model number has SE, so by looking at that chart we must have an engine for a sailor (Usualy with high thrust and a long shaft, the same can be said about the outboard) <br /><br />The next character is shaft length of your engine, you will either have an L X Y or Z if you don't have any of those characters you have a lame jane 15 inch outboard. Here is what those characters stand for:<br />L 20 inch from transom<br />X 25 inch from transom<br />Y 22.5 inch from transom<br />Z 30 inch from transom<br />NO LETTER... you have a 15 inch shaft.<br /> Looking back to our model number we have an "L" by looking at my chart we have a 20 inch shaft from the top of the transom. A very common shaft size for a sailboat outboard.<br /><br />The next two letters are what most of you have all been waiting for! You guessed it! It is the outboards year! OMC decided to trick us all and not put numbers in for the year, instead they lined up 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 with the word "introduces", so 1 is I, 2 is N, 3 is T, 4 is R, 5 is O and so forth. for your convenience here are the possible combinations:<br />CS 1980<br />CI 1981<br />CN 1982<br />CT 1983<br />CR 1984<br />CO 1885<br />CD 1986<br />CU 1987<br />CC 1988<br />CE 1989<br />ES 1990<br />EI 1991<br />EN 1992<br />ET 1993<br />ER 1994<br />EO 1995<br />ED 1996<br />EU 1997<br />EC 1998<br />EE 1999<br />SS 2000<br /> Back to our model number we have "CC" so we must have an engine from 1988, I was born in CU ;) <br /><br />Last but not least is the model run, letter is not really important but may be helpful when ordering parts. They are:<br />A<br />B<br />C<br />D<br />E<br />F<br />G<br />H<br />I<br />J<br />K<br />L<br />M<br />N<br />O<br />P<br />Q<br />R<br />S<br />T<br />U<br />V<br />W<br />X<br />Y<br />Z<br /> Our ourboard has "D" at the end so it is from model run D.<br /><br />Once again our Model number was HE10SELCCD<br />H for Hong Kong<br />E for Evinrude<br />10 for 10 horsepower<br />SE For SAIL ELECTRIC<br />CC for 1988<br />D for Model run D!<br /><br />Dotted line:<br /> ..................................................................................................... <br /><br />Engine made between 1999 and 2001 your model number will look like this:<br /> J 100 P Z 4 SS A These are even simpler to decode.<br /> If your outboards model number looks nothing like this or is made in 2002 or later, please scroll down past the next dotted line.<br /> <br /><br />The first letter in the model number tells you whether it is a Evinrude or Johnson. Here is how to tell:<br />E Evinrude<br />J Johnson<br /> In our example model number we have a "J" as the first letter. By looking at the list we must have a Johnson outboard.<br /><br />The next set of Characters will be a few numbers, this is the horsepower of your engine. 10 is 10 horsepower 200 is 200 horsepower and so on and on...<br /> In our model number we have the three numbers 1 0 0, so our outboard is 100 horsepower.<br /><br />After the horsepower you will have one one character, this will tell you about the design features of your engine. Here is the list:<br />C Counter rotation<br />E Electric start with remote steering<br />F Fitch fuel injection<br />G Graphite Paint<br />J Jet Drive<br />M Military<br />P Power Trim and tilt<br />R Rope start with tiller steering<br />S Special styling (paint color, a bow and ribbon..) <br />T Tiller steering<br />W Commercial model<br /> Going back to the serial number we have a "P" So by looking at the table we have a model with power trim and tilt.<br /><br />The next character in your model number tells you your shaft length, if you don't have a letter you have a standard shaft length of 15 inches. Here are the possible letters:<br />L 20 inch from transom<br />X 25 inch from transom<br />Y 22.5 inch from transom<br />Z 30 inch from transom<br />NO LETTER... you have a 15 inch shaft.<br /> In our serial number we have the letter "Z" so we have a 30 inch shaft.<br /><br />Next in the model number is something you may or maynot have! If you have you have a 3 or a 4 then you have it! If no number then ignore this part. Here is what they mean:<br />3 3 cylinder model<br />4 Fourstroke Engine<br /> In our model number we have the number "4" so we have a 4 stroke outboard.<br /><br />The next two letters are what most of you have all been waiting for! You guessed it! It is the outboards year! It will be a letter from a to z.<br /> Our outboard is from model run A!<br /><br />Going back over our model number of: J 100 P Z 4 SS A we have:<br />[b}J[/b} for Johnson outboard<br />[b}100[/b} for 100 horsepower<br />[b}P[/b} For power trim and tilt<br />[b}Z[/b} for an extra long 30 inch shaft<br />[b}4[/b} for fourstroke<br />[b}SS[/b} made in 2000<br />[b}A[/b} for model run A<br /> <br /><br />Next dotted line:<br /> .....................................................................................................<br /><br /><br />If your Evinrude, Johnson outboard is made after 2002 you will have a model number that looks like this: <br /> K J 150 F Z 4 SO B <br /><br />The first letter is a prefix and you may or may not have one.<br /> In our case we have the prefix "k"<br /><br /><br />The next character is the engine type:<br />E Evinrude<br />J Johnson <br /> So the example model number is a Johnson engine. J for Johnson :) <br /><br />The next set of Characters will be a few numbers, this is the horsepower of your engine. 10 is 10 horsepower 200 is 200 horsepower and so on and on...<br /> In our model number we have the three numbers 1 5 0, so our outboard is 150 horsepower.<br /><br />The next set of characters are the design features of your engine. They are as follows:<br />AP Advance Propulsion<br />B Blue paint<br />C Counter rotation<br />D Evinrude E-Tec<br />E Electric start with remote steering<br />F Direct Injection<br />G Graphite Paint<br />H Lightning Gearcase<br />J Jet Drive<br />M Military<br />P Power trim and tilt<br />R Rope start with tiller steering<br />S Saltwater edition<br />T Tiller Steering<br />TE Tiller steering Electric start<br />W commercial model<br /> In our serial number we have a "F" so we have a Direct injection outboard. <br /><br />The next character in your model number tells you your shaft length, if you don't have a letter you have a standard shaft length of 15 inches. Here are the possible letters:<br />L 20 inch from transom<br />X 25 inch from transom<br />Y 22.5 inch from transom<br />Z 30 inch from transom<br />NO LETTER... you have a 15 inch shaft.<br /> In our serial number we have the letter "Z" so we have a 30 inch shaft.<br /><br />After the Shaft size you will either have a set of two characters or the number 4. If you don't have the number four skip this step. If you do, you have a four stroke outboard.<br /> We do have the number "4" so we have a four stroke outboard. <br /><br /><br />The next two letters are what most of you have all been waiting for! You guessed it! It is the outboards year! OMC decided to trick us all and not put numbers in for the year, instead they lined up 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 with the word "introduces", so 1 is I, 2 is N, 3 is T, 4 is R, 5 is O and so forth. for your convenience here are the possible combinations for outboards made between 2002-2009:<br />SN 2002<br />ST 2003<br />SR 2004<br />SO 2005<br />SD 2006<br />SU 2007<br />SC 2008<br />SE 2009<br /> Our model number has "SO" so we have an outboard made in 2005. <br /><br />The final letter in the serial number has no real importance other then tell you your model run. model year 1998 and newer have some more changes<br />i hate typing so if you can post those as well may-be the forum gods will put them a top of list
