Well found a heck of a buy on a 84 Ford Centurion 3/4 4x4 dually, flatbed the other day with a 6.9 diesel in it, 4 speed manual and a 9 foot Meyer V snowplow, 6 brand new Toyo M&S tires, and less than 100K on it.

Well in playing around with it, it has a red push/pull switch on the gear shift, which I have surmised is a control switch for an Eaton 2 speed rear end.

I have never had one of these or played with one, wanted to know, you guys haul a lot of large stuff at times, has anyone here had an experience with these, if so, what good and bad is there about it?

Thanks.

Re: Eaton 2 Speed rear ends?

While I have never had one in a pick me up truck before, I have had them in lots of 5 ton vehicles.
(5 speeds in the box and 2 in the rear)
They are great for splitting gears on the hills when a full gear is to much
I would think for the most part you will be in high gear ratio in the rear for the most part, except when your fully loaded or require stump pulling speeds.

NOW remember, if your in 4x4 the front diff will also require a splitter to keep the rotating mass in sync, unless of course the 2 speed is built into the transfer case.

Some of those Two Speed Rear ends were what we called a working 4th and 5th. Unless we were loaded heavy, we just stayed in hi range. If we had a moderate load we start in 1 Hi, then 2 hi, 3 hi, 4 lo, 5 lo, 4 hi, 5 hi. Like Rbh, i have never had one in anything less than a 5 ton.

Re: Eaton 2 Speed rear ends?

Thanks Guys,

Well after talking to the local diesel shop, it seems it is a electric two speed transfer case I have and not a rear end. I have been searching and talking to people all day, and it seems this truck was built for some heavy duty ranch work, in addition to the plowing duties, the more I find out about it the more stoked I get about it, you will never believe what I paid for this monster ................
