So I have this boat that needs or wants lots of parts. I can?t even splash it until I redo the transom and maybe the floor. But I look for things that will make it a nice boat.

One of the things is a Power Tilt & Trim and being the motor is a 1974 135 Evinrude they can be hard to come by. I?ve read where ezmobee posted ?As a former owner of a '73 Johnson 85 that I desperately wanted to add TnT too.....I wish you luck, you're gonna need it. The newer units won't work.? And ?They are near impossible to find and when they show up on eBay they go for $400+!!!! I have been looking for over 2 years.? And then there?s the whole Calco vs. Prestolite issue.:(

So I?m looking around yesterday and I see a PTT with the Prestolite Pump that will fit for $75 and 10 hours to go. I stick it on my watch list and come back to it about 5 hours later. I decide to test the waters and see if someone has already put in a big bid, as hoping and needing this to get to my house for about $200 max, there?s $40 shipping on it. My wife needs root canal work this week, so boat parts are low on the list right now. I bump the bid up to $87 and I?m good. An hour later it?s up to $99.00, I?m out. I get home a little late from work, take the kids to swimming and get back home where I learn the furnace has decided to stop working, blower not turning on. I take a quick look, yea, like I?ll really fix it. Decide to stoke up the wood stove since its 15 degrees outside. I get a break and fire up the laptop, there?s about 20 minutes left and it?s still at $99. I?m thinking I have a chance here! :)

With 2 minutes to go it?s now up to $110. The heart starts pumping a little faster. I?m on the laptop and wireless so I?m trying to guess how soon to enter my bid and still hit that last second win. At 30 seconds left the price goes to $115. I type in my max bid and wait, enter, and.... confirm. My laptop freezes and nothing happens or so it seems. My heart pounding, I wait, I usually get notice if I won or have been out bid, but nothing happens. Nothings moving so I finally click check my status. My bid made it in with 5 seconds remaining.

Now B***l I don?t know who you are, but you beat me out by $2.50 with your bid at 4 seconds to go, so I?m a little ticked. I hope you are a member of this forum and will enjoy that PTT that was a very good deal at $202.71 delivered to your door. If by chance the buyer is ezmobee, you finally got one for under $400, and I?d be happy with that. I have a sneaking feeling that B***l bought it to flip it, because average people don?t have 3514 transactions on Ebay and I will soon see it on Buy it Now for $400+!!!

Disappointed, yes, mad, no, I?ll put the $200 towards the furnace or the transom and continue the quest for a PTT.

That?s my story what?s yours.

Yeah Ebay can get the ol' heart going at times.

10 years ago or so I needed a high end current limiting power supply ($1500-2000 new) and found one to bid on. It was at $5 with a minute to go and I had my bid ready to submit, with 15 seconds left I bit $100 and Ebay came back with "Please login to your account to bid" *#%@! FrAk...

It just so happened that my wife was standing behind me and started saying LOGIN, LOGIN, LOGIN!! (Well yeah no sh...)

With the pressure of 15 seconds ticking by and my wife (bless her heart) distracting me I missed getting the bid in by a couple of seconds. There were many 4 lettered works that flowed forth and the other bidder got it for,,,,, $5

I gave up on last minute bidding and instead put in a bid for the amount I am willing to spend. If I get it good, if not, another will come along at some point.

That's a lot less stress full,,, but it allows others to out bid you and runs up the price.

I totally agree with and highly encourage that bidding strategy when I'm selling something though :D

Hey Dan, I hope you found another one without paying full price. I had a $350,000.00 Gov't bid I had to submit online last year. Made it with 30 seconds to go after starting 1 hour before, due to their glitches. I didn't win that either.

Bubba - Yea I set a limit and don't exceed it, most of the time. But that last minute stuff is fun, if the other guy wouldn't have bid I would have got it for $117.50. The deal that got away - just like that one fish last year.;)

Ayuh,.... I still Snipe 'em,... Manually...

I decide what I think it's worth, then try to be there, 'n bid at 20 seconds left...
If I'm somewhere else,... Oh well, my fault...
If I was thinkin' a buck more than everybody else,... I win...
That way, I also have no time to get caught up, 'n increase the bid too...

I think my Best to date is probably the brand new Bennett trimtab pump I picked up a year or so ago...
It was at a freight salvage outfit's auction...
Bad pictures, described by folks that had No Idea what they were lookin' at, 'n can't read a tape measure....
Anyways,...
This auction was for something in a box, that had 1 flap open,...
Ya couldn't see Squat....
I knew the background, as I'd bought from 'em before, so I knew it was a Small box...
I then went out, 'n peeked at my pump, 'n decided That's what I was seein', in the little box...
It ran the 5 or 7 days, 'n was still at .99 nearing the end,... Just 1 bid from the guy that bids the .99 for every single auction these guys do.. Donno how much junk he must buy,..??
I took a chance, 'n bid about twenty bucks,...
It went off, 'n I WON,.... One Buck,.... ;) :D

It's still out on a shelf in the barn,...
Waiting for another 1 to die, or that next project to come due,....;)

Most of the time the last second bidding is useless. If someone has their maximum bid higher than you want to go or bid it will just bump theirs up over what you bid. But don't get discouraged tho. They are probably sitting in their easy chair cussing you just the same because you just made them spend more money thinking they were going to get it cheap.

How does it run up the price?

Some people "have to be the winner",,, or be the person on top. They don't consider the actual value of the item, they just have to WIN! I've seen it in a couple of my auctions and I thought the people were crazy, running up the bid well over the actual value of the item. I didn't mind though... If someone places in a high bid, it encourages others to keep bidding, since they are loosing.

Really, it doesn't matter as long as you are happy with the outcome. Like you, I bid my max bid 1 time and that's it. Only difference is, I do it in the last few seconds of the auction.

If I win, Great!

If I loose, Great! (I wouldn't want to pay more anyhow)

Re: Ebay Bidding and boat parts, Stories

I love bidding against all you guys and win EVERY single time I bid and I normally don't know until I get the email saying I won... How do I win EVERY time?

I use http://www.auctionstealer.com It is a free service if you only bid three times per month. The clock resets every month. If you bid more often, then pay for the membership.

I put in a max I am willing to bid for the item. Example: Knowing an item will probably sell for $100 and I am willing to pay $110, I will put that as my max bid. Within ~10 seconds of the end, auctionstealer places my bid the minimum amount over the last bid... say it was $79 and the bidding goes up $1.50. My bid will go in for $80.50 even though I said I was willing to pay $110. If you pay for auction stealer the bidding will be only a few seconds before the end and not the 10 seconds it advertises it will bid for free for you... For some reason if somebody bids the same price (in this case $80.50) and because I sent in my bid like on day 3 of a 5 day bid, my bid will supersede the last one...

After registering for auction stealer, find the item you want, highlight and copy the item number and then go to auction stealer and put in the bid number, indicate it is a eBay item (they do other bidding companies as well) and it will verify, it will take you to the premium page to pay for the monthly fee but go to the bottom of that page and continue to the free bid page. It will indicate how many more you have left for the month at the top right corner... As long as you do not exceed the 3/month... you are good to go...

I have bought over 100 items so far... and ALWAYS use auction stealer... so I have proven results... I guess I am fortunate in that I have never gone against a premium auction stealer member since they would beat me out of the win...

Give it a try and then watch TV or read IBoats and check your email after the final bid...

Let us know your results...

disclaimer: if the bid goes above your max bid, you will not win... however, if it is well before the end time, you will get an email telling you a bid is over your max bid you are willing to pay so it is up to you to increase or say goodbye and look for another item...

Hope this helps...

I have no doubt that a lot of sellers have buddies bumping bids like the do at live auctions. Every one I've been at, there was a couple of people bumping. If they get stuck paying for it, seller just reimburses them.

Outdoorsman -
I was at thanksgiving dinner with my wifes side of the family. One of my nieces had brought her boyfriend. He had something on ebay. He looks at my other nieces husband and says " hey will you bump this for me, I have a buddy thats supposed to be doing it, But I'm not sure he's watching it." So the husband starts bumping it. I had to laugh because this guy is a cop. But in the end he got the $ he wanted for the item.

The guy might have used one of the snipe services. Good for him. And good for you for using it. He was still willing to pay more than I was for the PTT. So instead of paying $160 he paid $202. Which was $2 more than I was going to pay.
Hey your B***l aren't you!;) Just kidding.
It still all boils down to who wants to pay more for it.

If your lucky you get a great deal, if your smart you don't pay toooooo much:D

I use esnipe for any item that doesn't have a buy it now. Bid goes in 4sec before the end. No, you don't win every time, but at least you're not showing other bidders they have competition.

Re: Ebay Bidding and boat parts, Stories

We have a local govenemnet auction site that has a policy that bidding ends 5 minutes after the last bid. I think all auctions should be that way. They have an end time but if you bid with 10 seconds left it adds 5 minutes to the bid time.

I buy and sell on eBay often.

I have yet to use an auto-bid program or web site to do my bidding but may try it.

For me, sniping is the best way to get the winning bid.

A lot of people do buy and re-sell, either right back on ebay or somewhere else.
I supplement my income that way!

Before I look at buying to resell, I have to get rid of the junk, treasures, I have now. And I hope someone overbids for all that stuff.
