There are tons of cool looking knives on ebay for cheap, too cheap, I am no knife expert but some of these look bad to the bone. Has anyone ever bought one of these? The price seems way too good to be true.

Quality, quality, quality, you get what you pay for. These knives come mainly from overseas, and you have absolutly no Idea whay kind of steel they are made of. Look on your satilite or cable chanel late at night and you will find them selling for about 1.00 apiece. and they sell them in bundles of fifty or more sometimes. Yes, the look cool, but what are you going to do with them? They are either good for killing or looking at.

Complete and total garbage. Somehow they manage to make them look good in the pics, but they most certainly are not. I've bought two of them...waste of steel. $20 will get you a good brand name knife. MUCH better investment.

Re: ebay knives

Henckel and Wustaf are some of the better knives on the market and so is Swiss Army however, they have varied grades that they offer. The upper grades are very pricey but worth it and the lower grades are only slightly better than others.

There are ratings on the knives from the ones that professional chefs use down to the consumer level.

If you are sincere about getting a good knife you need to visit one of the best resturants you can find and speak with the chef. Chances are the chef does not own the knives he uses ... he actually rents them. The chef can probably get you in touch with the right person who supplies knives to the chefs.

I purchased a few good quality knives for my wife and spent over $100 per knife... but, I can carve a roast or a turkey and it remains sharp enough to do surgery with. They are not ones you toss into the drawer everyday.

The ebay ones are quality.... homeowner quality at the bottom of the scale.

If you are considering using it for no good and just going to use it for murder..... don't use ebay, too much of a paper trail to find you  (Thank you CSI :D ).

Re: ebay knives

I agree with Bob on this.

I have a set of Henkels in my kitchen that one of my daughters gave me about 20 years ago. Their lower "grade" but they take and hold a great edge.

My grandson "SuperChef" Uses a mix of Henkels and Wustof top of the line knives and one Japanese ceramic blade knife that I don't know the name of.

I kind of think stl is talking about what I call "costume" knives that are really only good for looking at and intimidating people, sort of like a BB gun styled like an UZI.

About 10-years ago someone that sells and shapens knives told me those two companies are within a stone’s throw of each other. There is actually a trio with a third, lesser known knife company, also in the same area. All three companies compete with each other, all three make good stuff, but that third, smaller company supposedly makes the superior knives, smaller selection, and costs more than the Henckel or Wustaf knives. For the life of me I can’t remember the name of that third knife company. I’ll see if I can Google for it.

I have an amalgamation of those over-priced knives. For me they are tools. I don’t have much use for a $100 tool that only gets occasional use. I use those knives all day every day. They do hold an edge better than less expensive knives. That’s why I have them. For occasion use I’d opt for a cheap knife.
;)

I think the difference between the one-man-Henckels and the two-man-Henckels is just the handle, JB.

What kind of knife are you looking for? I've bought several knives from a company called Cold Steel and I've been totally happy with them. They are a little on the high side as far as price goes but like LubeDude said....ya get what you pay for. Cold Steel also sends out a seconds flier that you can get good stuff from at a reduced price. Go to their web site and sign up for their free catalog.

Re: ebay knives

I was originally talking about hunting knives. Sorry I should have specified. Some of these kitchen knives you guys are talking about look awsome. Either way I guess you get what you pay for. Its funny that the shipping and handleing charge is more than the knife is selling for on auction.

Re: ebay knives

Oh hunting knives... Cold Steel and Benchmark take and hold a good edge as well as some of the ceramic edged knives.

The real answer is stay with a brand name. Buck (which is joined with Swiss Army), Swiss Army, Gerber, Spyderco, Benchmark, Cold Steel, Gerber, SOG, Randall, Ka-Bar can be a long list. Depends on the budget I guess. Alot of good ones out there. I would avoid knock off's and fantasy knives .... what you need is a knife that will perform when you need it to.

Bob

Ahhhh, hunting knives.

Have several good ones and a couple of showy but not very good ones.

Best edge keeper is a USMC combat knife from WWII. They are usually KABARs, but this one is marked Camillus.

JB, Camillus makes very good knives. They are made right here in Camillus NY. I personally use an Old Timer Sharp Finger hunting knife and I prefer high carbon black steel over stainless.

Re: ebay knives

STL,
this is a good one, but make sure to get the carbon V steel version, and I would get the gut hook model. I have the non gut hook one.
http://www.ltspecpro.com/fixed-blades-master-hunter.html

OMC is correct. Go for the carbon steel over stainless. It takes a little more care to avoid rust, but its worth it.Heres another one for general use:
http://www.ltspecpro.com/13rtk.html
This is one awesome all around do anything knife.

And here is one of the baddest knives around. It looks goofy, but you cant even imagine how well it chops and cuts. You can cut a 1.5 inch sappling down with one wack.BUT, it can be a very dangerous knife if you arent careful. It can take a big hunk of your ankle if you arent careful when you swing it.And as with all cold steel knives,it comes out of the box sharp enough to shave your face with.
http://www.ltspecpro.com/35ltc.html

Another cool cold steel product is the "big bore blow gun". If you have ever shot a "swap meet/gunshow/pawn shop blow gun", once you shoot one of these, you will throw the "toy" blow guns away. These things are incredible! They have several different darts availible, but IMO the mini broad head darts work the best.(most accurate)The bamboo darts work good on birds however. It also doubles as a walking stick. Here it is:
http://www.ltspecpro.com/blowguns.html

On their site you can also send off for a free
DVD. It shows them abusing there kives to no end.It gets a little old after awhile of watching, but it is worth seeing.Do you get the impresson that I like cold steel products? :D
PS they also make a great fillet knife. Its thicker than most fillet knives, but is easy to get used to.
EDIT: All the above knives are available as factory seconds, for a lot less cash.My experiance with the 2nd's has been great. I had no idea why it was a second.
