Hey Guys, haven't been here for a while.

I just purchased this carb for my boat. It currently has the original carb on it, with a vacuum activated choke and the new one has electric. Not sure how to wire this. I don't have the carb yet, but I'm sure it will be in the instructions.

Input would be appreciated.

Thanks. Ken

run a purple wire from the coil + to one of the terminals on the choke. run a wire from a good ground to the other choke terminal

I got the impression that the 1409 ships calibrated for the 5.0L. You may have to recalibrate for a 5.7L motor. Here's the owners manual if you want to read up. It is a really great carb to work on once you have the whole metering system in your head, how it works. They make it pretty easy with their charts to determine what to step up or down to match your engine. Ask away if you get stuck.

Thanks Scott. that seems pretty simple. Now that you mention it, I thought I saw a purple not going anywhere.

Thanks for the manual, Rick. I'm under the impression its set up for the 5.7. Everything I've read says that you take it out of the box, bolt it on, set the idle, and in most cases that it.

Great. I must of heard wrong. I recalibrated to a 4.3, so guaranteed it wasn't in the zone when I got it. Good luck!

I spent some time calibrating and studying the carb. Got pretty good at analyzing things on them. They are a great carburetor to set up. Make sure you check plugs at both midrange, with primaries only open, and at WOT. Easy to have a lean spot and not really notice it until you end up with a hole in a piston or a tulip'd valve.

I wouldn't say the 1409 is set up for a 5.0 out of the box, I found it lean on plug reading. It idled great right out of the box but had an off idle stumble, and plugs were white especially at WOT. I ended up using a bigger accelerator pump nozzle (.43), .104 secondary jets, pink step up springs (7"?), stock .98 primaries with a 65 x 42 step up. Plugs are browner Now but I still have a flat spot at 3800 rpm. Not sure if I need a fatter step up or if that's when the secondaries open.

Bottom line book rick gave plus a little plug reading will most likely be in order, otherwise should be a bolt up.

Scott,

I wish Edelbrock would take the 1485 kit off the market. They need to update that kit or drop it entirely. It is PATHETIC that the 1485 kit was designed for PRE-1995, Pre-Vortec 4.3L V6 and is still the only 4.3L kit they make. The 1485 kit is 100% useless for calibrating a Vortec 4.3L. It is shameful that Edelbrock leaves that kit in their product line.

This is why I wound up getting a Holley 4160 to replace the Q-Jet on my pre-vortec 4.3, this version of the Holley is calibrated to work with the smaller 4.3s used by both OMC and Volvo and in fact it was original equipment on them starting in 1990. Also the Edelbrock is wider on the side where the shift linkage is and would interfere with the OMC Cobra shift linkage.....

It currently has the orininal carb on it,

Ayuh,...... No reason to buy any kits at all,.....
The original carb oughta be the Merc/Weber AFB,....
A Carbon Copy of the 1409,....
Jets, needles, springs, All of it interchanges 'tween these carbs,.....

The original has the choke stove, the 1409 is electric choke,...
Still the same carb,.... could swap the chokes, but donno why ya would,...

These are the specs for the 4.3 Vortec and non-vortec from the Merc service manual. These will serve as a good starting point. As Bondo said, same carb, Weber 9600 and 9666 and Edlebrock1409....

My apologies, only reason 4.3L came up was a my referencing it. OP is setting up a 5.7L. No relationship to where his thread drifted.

The one between the intake and the adapter and also the one between the adapter and the 1409. Sorry about that.

Buy 'em from Edlebrock, not Merc, unless ya like throwin' money away,....

No part number necessary,....
'n ya may not need an adapter, as the 1409 is a multi-fit carb,....
It's actually a spread-bore, with a square-bore housin',....
