I have a 92 johnson 150 fast strike. How can i check to see if my electric choke is working? The choke button is built into the key switch.

Re: electric choke

you do not have a Choke, a choke is a butterfly plate in the carb, that blocks air flow. you have what is called a Primer. it is black barrel shaped with a red handle.

Primer Solenoid
the primer replaced the old choke butterflies in the carborators, pushing in the key activates it, like the old choke plates, but injects fuel directly into the intake.
The red handle is used when your battery is dead, and you have to rope start. You move the handle 180 degrees.
Normal operating position is with the handle back over the body of the solenoid, like in the picture below.

to test pull the very small line off the top of the carb, or intake housing, pump up the fuel line bulb, holding the line so no one gets hit in the face with fuel, have another person turn the key to "ON" not start, and press in on the key. if the primer is works you will get a squirt of gas out of the line.

Re: electric choke

Is that also the case with a 1988 70 Johnson--no real "choke" when you do the "choke" at the key? How about for a 2003 carberated Yamaha 150? On the latter, I find that the manual choke works but not (apparently) the key. With the old 70 it's anybody's guess what's going on in there!
