Got an electric Maytag dryer. Just get a buzzing sound when pressing the start button. Any thoughts before we call for repair?

Thanks

Re: Electric Dryer Repair

I have an electric Kenmore Dryer. It would do the same thing. Sometimes it would run, sometimes not.
I Jer. E. Rig'd the door switch and had the wife hold the button. I spun the drum and it would start everytime I did that. So that told me the motor was not getting enough of a kick to start it.
I signed up on freecycle.org and eventually got a gas Kenmore dryer for free. Swapped out the motor, good to go.

Re: Electric Dryer Repair

Just a stab in the dark but most electric dryers have an overheat thermo-couple to shut them down. Your thermo-couple could be bad, could be the start circuit on the motor..... could just be time for a newer dryer.

If the dryer runs for a min. or so then it is the overheat thermo-couple or the vent tube is plugged.

It sounds like the motor is bad.

Re: Electric Dryer Repair

I tried AK Chappys idea and spun the drum while the wife pressed the start button. The drum would barely spin on its own and would stop when she let go of the button. Must be a bad motor. So next question. Is it cheaper to have Sears come out and replace the motor or buy a new dryer? Thanks for the help.

Part is $130-$150, Probably about 1hr to replace it. I don't know what Sears charges but I expect you could get away at around $200.

Sears came out to fix moms fridge last week and charged a $70 service fee.plus parts .might want to ask them ahead of time what there going rate is and fees are.

Re: Electric Dryer Repair

Thanks, we called a couple of places and it looks like it should be no more than $200. Much cheaper than buying a new dryer. Until then...off to the laundrymat we go! Thanks for the help.

Re: Electric Dryer Repair

Unless it is under some repair contract I have found private repair people MUCH cheaper than sears.

200 is not much cheaper than a new dryer, a new electric dryer is only about 300, 299 to be exact.

I'd chunk the old and get the new.

Re: Electric Dryer Repair

Sell it on ebay of course! :D

Scrap metal dealer or electric motor rebuilder may take it for scrap.
