I have that 1988 mariner 60hp outboard. I recently posted a question see below: If I can't correct the problem with tightening every fuel line and rebuilding the fuel pump is there a way to install a electric fuel pump to use a idle speeds when it normally dies out? This is a big problem where I live! We have all them Manatee zones!

I have a 1988 60hp mariner outboard that runs great at full throttle but at idle it will not stay running. The only way to get to start again or keep running at idle is to pump the primer bulb. Anything above idle is fine.

If I pump the bulb hard it starts right up and runs for a few minute the dies.

I have replaced the entire fuel line buld fittings and all.

I am at a loss as to what could be causing this.

Please help anyone.

Thanks in advance!
Tim.

Re: electric fuel pump

Your on the right track. Be sure all connections
and connectors dont leak air and check the pulse port for carbon,Youll be fine.Avoid the electric pump if possible.

Re: electric fuel pump

It may be a sticking anti-siphon valve. Its in the outlet of the fuel tank. You can replace it or just knock the ball and spring out and try it.

Good luck!

i have a 5o hp 1974 it wouldnot idle but ran fine at full throdle . pull the hood it idled fine . this was caused by a exzoust leak under the hood . no oxygen in the air . try runing without the hood on.
