Electric fuel pump...

I need some help regarding the placement of an electric fuel pump on my
1987, 350 Mercruiser block. It was set up for a manuel pump but the new block does not have the holes for a manuel pump so I must install an electric. The question is I have the bolt holes to mount the electric pump but do I route as follows: gas tank to fuel pump to water seperator to carb or gas tank to water seperator to fuel pump to carb? The reason I ask is they say an electric pump will not draw fuel but instead has good pushing power. So, do I want the pump just after the gas tank to push gas thru the water seperator then up to the carb? Thank you.

Re: Electric fuel pump...

If the fuel pump is mounted low in the engine compartment, draw is not an issue. Any boats I have seen all go tank to separator filter to fuel pump to carb.
Lines after the pump should be steel.

Make sure the pump is low pressure for a carb, not hi press for EFI.

Pusher type electric fuel pumps should be as close to the tank as possible. They push, not suck. Thats why the originals are in the fuel tank. Feed the water seperator then carb as you thought.

Thanks Wire2, that is how they were originally with the manuel pump, tank to seperator to pump to carb. All lines after the seperator were steel. The pump it's self will be at the same location as the manuel pump was with the help of a bracket. How does the "over flow clear plastic tube" coming from the carb go into the electric pump? Thank you

Overflow tube not needed with electric pump. And make sure you use A1 rated fuel hose, and to wire pump to an oil pressure switch for safety

Re: Electric fuel pump...

you can buy the setup direct from merc with the pump, filter, etc. in order to be legal everything you use has to be marine approved. pretty positive a volvo penta setup is exactly the same and considerable cheaper too. they never used an in tank fuel pump so stay away from anything like that you may see, completely illegal and unsafe on a boat.

6meter, I'll bow to your experience.
But from a safety standpoint I would have expected that it would be preferable to NOT pressurise the filter? I know it's only 5-6 psi...

Re: Electric fuel pump...

I do have another question I thought I could figure out but it seems I can't. What colored wires go to the safety switch and then what goes to the fuel pump. I have three days trying to think this through but can't. I have two black wires on the fuel pump of which one should be ground and the other I think should connect to the safety switch and then to the purple wire on the coil. The other "prong" on the safety switch gets two wires but what color and from where. Thank you again, Bob
