I have a 1989 Glastron GX-216 (350Mag/Alpha 1 Mercruiser). I don't know if this is standard/optional equipment on this craft (2d owner), but there is an actuator in the engine compartment that raises and lowers the sun deck. There is no model number/serial number manufacturer tag on this peice of gear. In the process of a floor replacement effort, I removed the wires to this actuator and now am ready to reconnect them. I note that the wires coming from the cockpit are both heavy guage white wires with no negative marking on them, I don't know which one is negative and which is positive. Then I got to wondering how this works. There are two switches; one that sends the actuator up, and one for down. But there are only two wires coming from the cockpit and two wires on the actuator. I am reluctant to hook the wires up in reverse polarity for fear that I will damage the actuator.

Can I get some advice how to check polarity of the cockpit wires and troubleshoot the actuator? I also looked to see if I could buy an actuator like this from somewhere, but I wasn't able to see one on the standard suite of sites I check. If my actuator needs to be replaced, does anyone know where I might find such a device.

Your assistance in these matters will be greatly appreciated.

Re: electric hatch actuator

-it maybe a direct voltage motor + -/ -+. take a volt meter, connect to wires. have someone hit the up switch, do you get +dc volts or -. same thing on the down. should be the opposite. it just runs the motor one way then the other.

2 switches? look at the back of the switches they may be set up in a crossover style(reversing polarity). If there are only 2 wires it won't hurt anything to test them by meter then a test hook up and see which way the actuator moves. Most of the major marine suppliers Kellogg marine ex. carry the actuators of varying sizes.
