I currently have an 80-85' GM small block v8 OMC electic stern drive that overheats within about 10-15 minutes of ideling. I checked the intermediate hose to see if it pours water out and all it does is blow white exhaust smoke. Nothing to the heat exchanger. This problem started slow to where I could just add water/coolant to cure the overheating and fianlly just started overheating to about 220 within ten minuets no matter what. Water streams out the port side of the stern drive as it should and both the exhuast hoses gets a little too hot to grab hold of. I really hope its not the impeller but all signs are pointing that way. Thoughts? Impeller means boat has to get hauled out, stern drive off the transom and lower half pulled off. May as well replace the whole drive at that point.

The engine is a Chevy 305 if that helps. First time post and am really trying to avoid hauling this 67' Carver out of the water but with boats they always do everything you dont want them to do so I'm sort of prepping myself.

If what you're saying is that your not getting raw water to the heat exchanger, yes, you need to replace the impeller. But chill out. Replacing the impeller is a long way from replacing the drive!
