Electric Propulsion Recommendations?

I'm looking for an electric trolling type motor as auxillary power for my 28-foot sailboat. My requirements are to have the most efficient, highest powered, longest shaft transom mount. I understand I will be severly underpowered but I'm willing to accept that. What I have found is the following three models:

1. Motor Guide GWT107V, 36 volt, 42" shaft, 107 lb. thrust, $536
2. Minn Kota Rip Tide RT101/STM, 36 volt, 42" shaft, 101 lb. thrust, $550
3. Minn Kota EP130, remote steering, 24 volt, 36" shaft, 130 lb. thrust, $1,050

I don't need remote steering. My transom height is 24" so perhaps the 36" shaft is too short. Can anyone here recommend one of these models over the others as far as quality and features or point me towards further info on the subject?
Thanks
James

Min Kota, Min Kota, Min Kota. The 24 volt will be simpler-one less battery. I would look for a 48" (at least) shaft.

Howdy, James.

I think they are all good motors. I also think that a 36" shaft would be enough on a 25" transom.

The reason that the EP-130 costs so much more is only partly the remote steering. It is the most efficient motor.

I agree with DJohns. Fewer batteries, more thrust and more efficient.

If the high price scares you off, the RipTide is a slightly better value than the MG.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Electric Propulsion Recommendations?

Let's see now. I think it is something like 60lbs thrust equals one horsepower (anyone have exact conversions?) Two horsies to cruise the harbors is ok but a chop and blow and some current and you add prayer for more momentum. My 12.5 wooden skiff is 36lb powered and I still would opt for a 2 hp Honda for more zip and maneuverability. Very few of the harbor boats here in L.A. have electric trolling motors (thrusters on larger power boats, however}. As for your choices, consider the Motorguide stainless steel shaft tube as sturdier and preferred by bass boaters. MinnKotas are plastic composite (bendable). Pulse powered MinnKotas are more efficient. Our harbor has a few of those electric Duffy touring boats. They have a huge battery and strict charging requirement. Are you sure you want electric? Do you like to maintain and buy batteries instead of gas? 4 strokes are very quiet and don't stink. Best wishes in your deliberations.
