Electric start Merc 9.9

I have a year 2000 electric and manual start Mercury 9.9 remote steering. It has a mercury electrical cable and fitting coming out of the starboard lower cowling. HOWEVER: I can not find any site for battery cables. Did this engine have all power at the ignition switch or were battery cables squeezed in under the control cables at the access port on the starboard side?
