Electric start on a Johnson 6hp

I just bought (for a very good price) a Johnson 6hp serial number j6slcde.
It was listed as having an electric start and charging system.
There are cut black and white wires coming from the motor and there are wires leading to the tiller throttle and what appears to be a black button on the end of the tiller.

Can anyone help me figure out what all of it does and how to activate the electric start?
the guy I bought it from says the button on the tiller is a kill switch. I am assuming the large (10-12 gauge maybe) black and white wires are for the charging system.

Thanks for any suggestions or help.

That is the kill switch button your referring to. If there isn't a clip holding that button out the motor will never start.

Does your motor even have a starter? If you don't know does your flywheel have teeth at the bottom for the starter to engage?

A 1986 6 hp with electric start would be rare.

Why didn't the Seller show you where the start button was at?

The electric start buttons are usually located in the front of the motor on the right side (shift lever side) The button would sit on the end of that metal rectangular box that sits right above the transom clamps. I doubt your motor has the rectangular box since my mid 80's 8 hp doesn't have it.

I don't think there is any such thing as a 6hp with electric start is there? At least not in 1986. J6SLCDE translates to
J = Johnson
6 = horsepower
S = Sail model
CD = 1986
E = any mid year changes

The sail model does come with a alternator/battery charger. Probably some of the extra wires you are seeing.

No electric start on any of those 6hp models. Never was.

Some of the 6s had a charging system (4 amp if memory serves) but that's it. To the uninitiated, the spiral type recoil starter may look like a starter motor...
