I have a 1989 25 mercury tiller outboard. Sometimes the electric start works....and sometimes it dont. Most of the time I can work the throttle / shifter back and forth from f/n/r/back to nuetral and it will work, but sometimes it dont. Will someone please tell me whats wrong. I dont know which part to replace. Thanks, Keith

I also forgot to mention that when electric start dont work,I can still pull start it,so it is in nuetral. However I'm not sure if the same feature tells motor that you're in nuetral when you manually crank vs. electric start...

Re: electric start problem

Throttle has a switch to detect neutral. The starter will not engage unless throttle is in neutral. You description of moving the throttle around in neutral seems to indicate that the neutral detection switch has a problem. Could be bad switch or bad wires. That would be where I start looking.
