The wiring diagram for my 1976 40hp calls for 6 gauge from solenoid to starter . 6 gauge for battery cables.. 16 gauge for the rest. Should be similar for your motor. EDIT The fused wire from key switch/push button is 12 gauge with a 20 amp fuse.
