Electric Trolling motor as backup for 14ft Fiberglass??

Have a 14', Fiberglass runabout with Evinrude 50hp, (4 stroke), total boat weight with 2 people etc , about 1400lbs, (guessing) and instead of having an emergency gas kicker, weighing 50+lbs, plus maybe separate tank if its a 2 stroke, plus installing separate kicker bracket, I was thinking of a lightweight, 40-50lb thrust electric, which could mount directly to transom when needed, and since boat already has a deep cycle battery, but would it push the boat, especially against the wind or currents? it would only be for emergency use should the 50hp quit, boat is only used in saltwater, but due to cost difference, if I used a freshwater motor in salt water, then ran it in fresh water after, would it be okay, or will the saltwater cause immediate, non reversable damage. And how fast would it push my boat and how long would an electric last assuming battery is at or near a full charge, Thanks

I run a 15' fiberglass w/70hp in the Bays and inshore. It does have a 54lb thrust saltwater electric that I use to maneuver around the kelp, docks, fishing spots, keep my drift on target, etc. But ain't no chance that thing would get me back in against any wind or current whatsoever. I got Seatow for that.

I would say that the newer trolling motors are a lot less draining on a battery than older ones. I have a new 55 lb. thrust Minn Kota 12 volt saltwater (riptide ST), and can troll 8 hours with it and still have 1/2 charge. It is bow mounted on my Sea Chaser 175. I am sure that it would limp me home if needed.

If you are only going to use it for an emergency, I would have no reservations with a non-saltwater motor. That being said, even without being dipped, over time the salt environment will have an impact but with the motor being sealed it should not affect it much. I use regular reels for saltwater fishing etc. and just rinse well after each trip.
