Electric Winch Strap?

Hello from the UK.

I am in the process of installing an 2000lb rated 12v electric winch to my roller coaster trailer. To those not familiar with the manufacturer it is simply a trailer fitted with rollers not bunks. The winch comes complete with a steel wire winch rope...I have never been happy with a steel rope mainly due to horror stories of boaters injured when the rope has snapped under tension.

I recover the boat alone which involves "floating" the boat 3/4 onto the trailer and winching the rest. The boat and normal equipment weighs approx 650k(measured over a weighbridge)

Is it possible to replace the wire rope with a winch strap? Is there any practical difficulties? or should I just dismiss the idea entirely?

Lots of folks, myself included, use the 2"wide woven nylon "seatbelt webbing" type strap for winches. The tensile strength on these straps is very high, no rust, no stuck fingers from frayed wire edges. Only problem that I'm aware of is that the straps can get twisted if you don't feed it onto your winch spool in a straight line, but once you get it wound on there straight it tends to stay straight. If the base of the winch drum is rounded, the strap will tend to roll up rather than wind up flat. If the drum is flat at least the width of the strap it will wind up just fine.

Will you be able to secure a strap to the hub of the cable winch??
The hub likely has a hole or a clamp for the round cable and not a wide slot in the hub for the web.

Another alternative is synthetic winch rope. 45 feet of 8500lb capacity rope is about $50

If there is no attachement for a strap, simply drill a hole through each side of the hub. Insert a bolt from one side, through the loop of the strap, through the opposite flange and then insert a nylon insert nut (self lockiing). The only "gotch" here is there must be enough room for the nut and bolt head to rotate without striking anything. Install the bolt as close to the base of the hub as possible.
