Is there a chemical that can be used to clean heavily oxidized copper wire prior to making connections?
Wires that have been around awhile oxidize even if the insulation is cut back. I have seen this on automotive, boat & trailer wires.

Believe this or not but if they are exccessable to dip tommato juice will clean anything copper and or brass hat has tarnished. But it has to be a strong consentration.

I use to have a bottle of jewelry cleaner I used. Tarnx or something like that. Fan the strands out and stick them in the bottle for a while and they cleaned up real good.

Ketchup works too....... But..... if there is green corrosion inside the insulation .....it's time to replace that wire since it will have a greatly increased resistance

If the copper wires/strands have turned black, you "should really think about replacing the whole run".
Oxidization and poor contacts (high recistantse SP) lead to wire breakdown.

Yep, replace it with tinned wire.

Yes I would have to agree with the above said on the green death it will travel up th ewire and lead to resistance issues foe sure replacement is a must and worht every second of re-wire fighting electrical issues on a boat really sucks it cut m summer in half literally!!!!!!!!!!!
