I am entertaining replacing the big power plug from the outdrive to the rest of the boat....the current unit is corroded and evil, and does not grab the male plugs in spite of attention there. I would imagine that this might be an aftermarket item (less cost)? Or should I cut, splice and soldier the wires?

This is an old (1983/4) Mercruiser 470.
Thanks
Rich Peabody

Re: electrical connector

I am sure there are aftermarket plugs out there, keep in mind coast guard regulations may exsist on the type of plug you may use. If the problem is only one wire you might bypass the plug it certainly won't be the first one that is has been done on, the only drawback in doing them all is if you ever have to remove the engine.

Re: electrical connector

The only problem doing what you propose is you. What are your wiring/soldering/splicing skills?
Only you can answer that question.

I would get a can of CRC electrical contact cleaner and make another attempt at cleaning the plug first. Sometimes the male plugs can be spread open a little to improve contact.

Re: electrical connector

Thanks a bunch.....I had entertained either using, say, a 4 pin trailer connector and a 10/12 gauge triple cannon plug from the NAPA store.

I am capable of doing the soldiering, but was told that the engine side of the harness went from the plug to the initial component....something that might make me happy in a 20+ year old boat that a bunch of ham fisted folk seem to have had their mitts on.
Thanks again.
Rich Peabody
