Hi All,
first time posting. I have done as much research as I can stand on the forum to try and resolve me issue with my 2001 Larson Cuddy cabin with a 5.0 GL-A red volvo penta engine, however I'm stuck and need some help. I've tried to look at the electrical guru "Don" page for his guide to to this, but i can't get the link to load or the pdf to come up. if anyone could post it here, that would be a big help. so here's the back story.
Bought the boat 6 years ago, ran it for 5 years and last year it sat all year. I unwinterized it in the spring of 2019, it started right up in the driveway, changed the oil, new fuel filter, new impeller and new spark plugs. then she sat until fall. In the fall, I tried to start her up to winterize her with antifreeze and the usual procedure. She wouldn't start and there had been alot of rust and corrosion on the engine and carb. I did my best to empty the water out of the engine and fill the engine with anti freeze through the hoses.
A month ago i uncovered her with the hopes of getting her going again. I removed the 2 barrel carb and rebuilt it. It was my first time rebuilding a carburetor, so that is an area of concern. While I was removing the carb, I noticed the intake manifolt had broken on the front of the engine, right under the thermostat housing. i bought a used volvo penta intake manifold, new thermostat, fuel pump, fuel filter and new alternator. I finally got everything back together last weekend and it will not start.
So after searching through this forum, i found several of Don's posts about jumping the 85 and 86 terminals while cranking. He said it should show 10 plus volts while cranking and mine shows 5-6 volts. When i first hooked the battery back up, the alarm that's installed on the engine was beeping, but now when i turn the battery on there is no noise, the fuel pump doesn't turn on, nothing. (i put 12 v to the alarm from the battery and it works) I have posted pictures below to help with my explanation. So, I jumped the fuel pump directly from the battery, it kicks on immediately and pumps fuel ( i removed the line at the carb to confirm). If i connect the orange 12 v line on the back of the alternator to the green L2 terminal, the relay next to the fuel pump clicks, but the pump does not turn on. i traced the wires back to the left side exhaust manifold and found 2 fuses and another bigger relay with a ground. With the key in the run position, i have 12 v to both fuses and to the relay connector. The first photo. if i turn the key to start with that relay removed, the fuel pump turns on, but the engine doesn't crank. I am also able to jump the terminals of that relay connector and the engine turns over and the fuel pump runs.
I pulled all 8 spark plugs and each has spark, however the spark is a yellowish color, not blue as i'm used to. I don't know if this is a sign of a problem. I also have tried moving the distributor to adjust the timing to see if the engine will even show some sign of life, but nothing. I tried spraying starter fluid while i jumped the relay connector and nothing. I even checked the function of the kill switch next to the steering wheel to make sure that wasn't the problem and it functions correctly. (12 v in and when the button is depressed, 12 v out) My boat has two batterys and i switched the one battery i have been using to the other side to see if the terminals would make a difference. It seemed the same. Also, it doesn't seem to turn over consistently, meaning i turn the key or jump the relay and it will turn over, then hesitant, then continue to turn over.
I would really like to track this issue down myself and any help would be greatly appreciated, including that pdf that Don posted that i wasn't able to open.
