Electrical issue after installing new starter

Hello,

I installed a new starter today and I went to try it and the engine cranked a little then stopped. Now, when I turn the key, none of the gauges like battery voltage work anymore. They were working before I installed the starter. I can't even get a click from the solenoid. Did I install the starter wires wrong? I should have taken a picture of how they were installed previously but I didn't. Any ideas? It is a 1997 Glastron with a Volvo inboard.

Thanks that helps! I think my issue is that the starter I bought has three terminals and not four. Where do I put the extra wire?

I'm not VP guy but maybe this can be figured out, or a VP guy will come along and help. First I have some questions:

What motor do you have?
What is the starter part number that you bought?
What wire is, and what wire is not connected?

I don't have the starter handy. I'm away from the house but will send that information when I get it. It's a sierra starter. It replaces my old Arco starter part number 30460. The arco one had four posts. This one has three. I connected the red yellow wire to the small post and the purple wire to a post on the starter thinking it was just a ground wire but further research says I'm wrong on that. Not sure on the engine. I have had a really tough time finding a serial number. Nothing on carb cover or engine block. Parts guy found the sierra starter based on the Arco part number.

What size motor is this and is it fuel injected or carburetor?

The Arco 30460 is a marine permanent magnet starter motor, and shows its for a 12 3/4 flywheel. That number crosses for use with a 3.0L

The purple wire is 12V hot when motor is running.
The Yellow/Red is the solenoid start circuit to engage the starter

The Sierra part number for year should be 18-5919

as before I'm just guessing because I don't know which motor

I'm finding you have the wrong starter for your model year, or at least for the wiring. What is your full model number?

Was able to figure this out today. Apparently the purple wire isn't necessary with my new starter? I left the purple wire off and just attached the yellow/red wire to the starter. Both wires originate from the ignition so I'm not sure what its purpose is. Parts guy was pretty confident that I had the right part for my model. Once I took off the purple wire it started right up.

Sounds good, suggest not letting the purple wire ground out. Tape the end up
