Just purchased a 2000 Reinell 203 with Volvo 5.0 Penta.

Took it out for first run - great!

Changed stereo with same brand (same harness and connections - stereo change only). Worked great!

Took it out yesterday. Prepping boat and noticed blower did not turn in after turning on battery switch. Also noticed stereo did not turn on. Borrowed a jumper to get the blower turned on. Stereo still did not turn on.

Got it in the water and it turned over. Bought gas. Turned on blower, started, back out and then put forward. Engine stalled and would not start. Turned off blower and got it started. Back to dock and charged both batteries for 5-10 minutes.

Stereo suddenly came on. Ignition would not start. Disconnected stereo and ignition started.

Drove boat around lake and noticed tach would jump and pin at 6000rpm at low speeds. Give it power and it would snap back to 3000 and work properly. Even stranger, when steering at low speeds, tach would jump to 3000 and back to 6000.

I’m thinking either something is loose that’s causing all these issues or dead battery. I don’t know enough to even be dangerous in this scenario.

please help!

Start at the battey, disconnect, clean, tighten and seal every connection on your way up to the hull

By clean, 150 grit, and shiney clean enough your mother in law would eat off them

Every battery cable connection.
Every electrical connection

Thanks! It turned out to be 2 issues (so far). Battery switch was faulty. Replaced. Starter battery is replaced. Everything seems to be in order.

Oh yeah, and I polished the crap out of the cable connectors. Shiny and (like) new!
