electrical problem I think?

I was out last night fishing and about halfway through the night I was going at about 4K rpm's and all of a sudden my motor bogged down to about 3K and I immediately assumed I hit a lobster pot and it was around the prob so i stopped raised my motor and nothing. I lowered the motor and started to go again and at WOT all I could get was 4K. So I stopped and fished a while and then a T-storm rolled in and I figured I would get in so I started the motor and it ran great up to 5500 rpm so i thought it was weird but hey it was working again so I was happy. After about 5 minutes it bogged down from 5000 rpm to 4K at WOT again then it would go back up to normal and bogg back down every few minutes. I had no choice but to ride it out because the lightning was getting to be a little crazy at that point not to mention i had to tow in a stranded boater before the storm hit. So again after I dropped off the stranded boater and started again the whole way to my slip every few minutes it would pick uip and run 5500 rpm and then back down to 4K at WOT. I changed the spark plugs yesterday and put in a new freshwater wash down valve onm the motor the one with the quick disconnect so i can easily hook a hose right up to it to flush the motor. The motor was pissing great but would any of this have anything to do with my problem? I was thinking maybe a powerpack is on its way out? thanks for all the help guys.

Re: electrical problem I think?

It could be as simple as a bad spark plug, put it could also mean a check of the entire ignition system. It could also mean a dirty carb, so don't keep running it until you track down the problem.

plugs can be bad brand new? If that is a possibility I would have to point to that being the problem because I did just change them yesterday a few hours before I went out. How do I go about finding which plug it was or do I just go buy 6 new ones again?

Id clean reset and refit the old plugs. If it goes OK then you know its one of the new plugs.

Gap at .030, put a timing light on each plug wire, see if they are all firing.

It could be arcing out down the side of the spark plug porcelin (leaky boot). Replace them if they are dried or cracked etc. Smear some dielectric grease in them.

hey tashas how did you unclog it? I will put dielectric grease in each boot also, and make sure they are gapped to .030.

also I forgot to mention that it happened after hitting a few waves it would bog down then stay there and I would hit another set and it would pick up again then hit another and it would bog down ect..... It was very calm out so when I hit waves they were boat wakes and the boat traffic was very slow so every few minutes.

I went down to my boat and pulled every plug and checked the gaps they are all .030. I checked all the lines and didnt find any major kinks one was a little bit bent so I straightened it out, I put dielectric grease in every plug boot on the plug side and the coil. I also checked the fuel overfill valve and unclogged that. It seemed to be running good when I left, I did not have time to go out and test it but I will see.
