Hello, I have a 1995 40 HP Mercury, I have a open somewhere? I know this because my battery will run down over 2 days and not crank the motor, and when every thing is off I can get a spark out of the positive cable(that runs to the motor). Also my gauges are all dead? When I turn the switch to the run position I don’t get any power to the gauges (gas,volts,ect.). I have checked all my connections, wires and fuses I followed all of them and they are clean and tight. Any ideas?

Re: Electrical Problem.

Howdy, Shooter.

I think it is more likely that you have a short circuit or a load that stays on when you shut down.

The additional complications of no power to your guages suggests at least one incorrect connection.

You will need a schematic or a wiring diagram, a voltmeter and electrical troubleshooting techniques to isolate the problem. If you don't have all of the above, take it to a good wrench.

Good luck. :)

Re: Electrical Problem.

I'm a bit confused with your explanation. It doesn't sounds like you have an open. It sounds like you have a leak (a mild short) somewhere. One way to check is to get an ammeter and put it in series with the battery and one of the battery cables. It will tell you how much of a current leak you have (milliamps). If you do see that you are leaking, you can try disconnecting wires until you see that there is no more current leaking.

Do you have an old cheap battery? Get a new good Sears DieHard.

Re: Electrical Problem.

Problem#1… Well it turns out my gauges wouldn’t work because my battery is totally dead, I hooked my gauge panel up to one of my other batteries and “BINGO” Don’t know why battery died? I put it on the charger and it reads full charge? Problem#2… It seems my Voltage Regulator is the problem for the battery drain. I can get a spark with everything off from the positive cable all the way up to the two yellow and red wires going to the stator and solenoid through the Voltage Regulator, I can then disconnect to the Regulator and get no spark. Are Voltage Regulators known to go out like this?
Thank You
