Electrical Problem

I have an '82 260 Mercruiser. It is running great but when cruising around 3400 RPM's and above the engine starts cutting out when I trim the outdrive. Lower RPM's it has no effect on the engine at all. The trim motor is connected to the battery directly but it still cuts the engine out. Any ideas where my power drain is coming from?

Re: Electrical Problem

The pump draws over 100 amps of current when trimming up under load so when you’re trimming the voltage is dropping below the level necessary to run the motor correctly

Any bad connection, it doesn’t matter how they look they need to be removed and cleaned, battery cables may look fine but internal corrosion can limit there ability to pass current or the battery could be worn out

You can connect a DVM directly to the battery and see how low the voltage drops when our trimming up to get a better idea about the problem

Tommays
